Noon – 12:50 p.m.     Biology Colloquia, Center for Science and Technology, Room 103

The Biology Department and Center for Global Health are thrilled to host our second annual alumni colloquium as part of homecoming. This year’s speaker will be Dr. Richard Nakamura ’68, former Director of the Center for Scientific Review at the National Institutes of Health.

 

3 – 6 p.m.     Welcome Center Open Hours, Comstock Room, Runyan Center

Make this your first stop when you arrive on campus! At the Welcome Center, you’ll pick up your name tag and schedule for the weekend. Plus, there will be games, refreshments, and homecoming giveaways for you to enjoy!

It’s just how it sounds! This social connects alumni and students together (refreshments and food provided). As an alum, you can share your guidance and care and ensure the world will continue to be changed by Earlhamites – for good.

As part of the numerous events to commemorate Latinx Heritage Month 2023, the Latinx and Caribbean Student Association (LCSA) invites Earlham’s community to savor delicious Latin American cuisine and to forge meaningful connections.

Current faculty and staff welcome you to visit CST and get to know more about Computer Science, Math and Physics at Earlham today. You’ll also have a chance to learn about Earlham’s new engineering program!

 

4 – 6 p.m.     Climbing Wall Open Hours, Athletics and Wellness Center

Join EC Outdoor Ed at the Ethan Solomon Climbing Wall for a rocking good time! Dust off the old climbing shoes and head to the Athletics and Wellness Center where some current Earlhamites will be ready to show you the ropes! Whether the wall was your old hang-out spot or if you’ve never been before, now is your chance to take your weekend to new heights! It’s an Earlham baseball homecoming tradition! !

7 a.m.     Morning Bird Walk, starting at Stout Meetinghouse

Wendy Tori, Associate Professor of biology, leads a morning bird walk on campus. Coffee, pastries, and binoculars will be provided! Fingers crossed for a fun fall migration!

 

8:30 a.m.     Golden and Emeriti Reunion Classes Breakfast, Earlham Dining Hall, Runyan Center [registration required – cost free]

This special breakfast is four golden and emerita reunions (alums of the classes from 1973 and before). Jenny Freed, Director of Special Collections and Archives, will be speaking about your time at Earlham.

 

9 – 10 a.m.     Drum Circle at the Richmond Farmer’s Market, Jack Elstro Plaza

Stop by the Richmond Farmer’s Market and join Earlham’s Hand Drum Ensemble. No previous musical knowledge is necessary! Richmond’s Farmer’s Market also features great produce, goods, and crafts from locals businesses, farmers, and crafts people.

 

9 – 10:30 a.m.     Alumni of the Joseph Moore Museum Gathering, Trivia, and White Mastodon Gift Exchange, Joseph Moore Museum

Join past museum student employees and volunteers to reminisce about museum shenanigans. Bring a nerdy wrapped gift worth less than $25 to participate in the optional White Mastodon Gift exchange.

 

9:45 a.m.     50th Class Reunion Photo, on the steps of Earlham Hall [rain location is Landrum Bolling Center, room 105]

It’s picture day for the class of 1973! Let’s get our photo together on the steps of Earlham Hall while your class comes together for their 50th reunion! Photos will be mailed to attendees after homecoming weekend!

 

10 a.m. – Noon     Residence Hall Open House and Tours, leaving from Earlham Hall lobby every 15 minutes

Take a guided tour of the newly renovated residence halls! Tours will leave every 15 minutes and will be customized based on where you want to go and what you want to see.

 

10 a.m. – 2 p.m.     Joseph Moore Museum Open House, Joseph Moore Museum

Visit the museum to see the galleries, enjoy a planetarium show, see the live animals and get a sneak peek into the results from our summer research projects on sex bias in the bird collections and Joseph Moore’s 1874-75 collecting trip to Hawaii. The Alumni Memories exhibit will be on display for alums to contribute a museum memory and read about other memories collected over the years at homecoming.

 

10 a.m. – 3 p.m.     Welcome Center Open Hours, Comstock Room, Runyan Center

Hear the latest about what’s happening at Earlham from President Anne Houtman. We can’t wait to share what the future holds for Earlham and Earlhamites!

 

11 a.m. – Noon    The Science, History and Wonder of the Solar Eclipse, Center for Science and Technology, rooms 103 or 300

Eclipses are rare celestial phenomena that have enthralled humans since time immemorial. Come to a sample lecture to learn about eclipses from ancient times all the way up through present day. In addition to the historical and cultural impacts of these events, we will discuss their scientific basis and their utility for performing unique celestial observations. With upcoming solar eclipses on October 14, 2023 and April 8, 2024, this is the perfect time to learn some relevant astronomy!

12:30 p.m.     Historical Walking Tour, departing from the Heart

The Earlham Friends Collection and College Archives’ student workers and staff will lead an historical walking tour of Earlham College. They will talk about the history of the college and tell fun stories as we walk around campus. Highlights will include the Lindley Hall Fire and epic student pranks.

 

1 p.m.     Women’s Soccer vs. Manchester University, Matlack-Messer Stadium

Root on the Quakers as they compete against Manchester at Matlack-Messer Stadium!

 

1 – 4 p.m.     Equestrian Rides and Horse Barn Tours, Suzanne Hoerner Jackson Equestrian Center

Stop by the horse barn to see exciting, new renovations and then take a ride on one of the horses!

 

1:30 – 2:30 p.m.     Dedication of Sadler Athletics Complex, the Gene Hambrick ’73 Varsity Tennis Courts and the Evan Farber Recreational Tennis Courts, meet at the corner of Earlham Drive and Gurney Drive

Join us to honor the generosity of Randy ’73 and Melissa Sadler as we dedicate the Evan Farber Recreational Courts and the south side of campus, home to the Gene Hambrick ’73 Varsity Tennis Courts, Sadler Baseball Stadium, and the soon-to-be completed softball field.

  • When We Say ‘Hiroshima’: Reflections on the Remembering and Forgettingof the Atomic Bombingsthrought he Poetry of Kuhira Sadako, Dr. Tanya Maus, Peace Resource Center Coordinator for Willmington College | Landrum Bolling Center, room 105 This talk explores the life and poetry of Hiroshima atomic bombing sufferer, Kurihara Sadako (1913-2005), who devoted her life to reflecting upon the devastating human toll of militarism, especially that of Japanese militarism in the Pacific War. Through her writings, can others also find the courage to examine past legacies of harm?

    Dr. Tanya Maus is the director of the Peace Resource Center at Wilmington College. She received her PhD from the University of Chicago, specializing in modern Japanese history. From 2007-2014 she taught East Asian history at Wittenberg University, including courses on the history of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan as well as Japanese imperialism in East Asia. At the Peace Resource Center, Dr. Maus maintains and promotes the Center’s unique Barbara Reynolds Memorial Archives, one of the largest collections of archival materials in the U.S. related to the human experience of nuclear war through the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.

    This talk is co-sponsored by the Institute for Education on Japan (IEJ), Center for Social Justice (CSJ), Jewish Studes and Peace and Global Studies (PAGS). Join us for a reception after Dr. Maus’s talk. The reception will blend both a celebration of Japanese Studies, Japan Study and SICE anniversaries.

  • How to Preserve your Family Treasureslike an Archivist or Curator, Jenny Freed, Director of Special Collections and College Archivist Basement of Lilly LibraryJoin Jenny Freed to learn how to preserve your family treasures like a Special Collections professional. Jenny will give you a brief introduction to preservation, discussing such topics as the impact of acidity, temperature, humidity, and other environmental factors on objects. She will also bring in sample objects to show you how they would approach their care and preservation. You are welcome to bring items for Jenny to look at. If you can’t travel with your object, send Jenny a picture with some information to
    [email protected], and she will try to bring along a similar object from Earlham’s collection to the session. Please note, she will not tell you how to preserve your item. She will tell you instead the different approaches they could take if an object like it came into her care. Limited to 15 participants.

  • Mythbusting: The Erotics of Gladiator Sweat, Maxwell Paule, Associate Professor of Ancient and Classical Studies | Landrum Bolling Center, Room 124Did you know that gladiator sweat was prized by Roman women for its use as a powerful aphrodisiac? It wasn’t, but you’d be forgiven for thinking so because this factoid has been repeated in multiple books, on the History Channel, and on BBC News – UK. In this class, we’ll look into the actual facts about gladiator sweat, and track the evolution of this remarkably popular myth.
  • Q&A with the Joseph Moore Museum Research Teams, Joseph Moore MuseumFind out how collecting bias impacts the museum specimens and their research potential in a special behind-the-scenes exhibit in the bird collection room, staffed by the summer student/faculty research team. In the museum gallery, meet another JMM summer research team who studied Joseph Moore’s journals and letters from his 8-month collecting trip to Hawaii in 1874-75. See the lava he scooped with an iron spoon from a flow on the big island and the cephalopods he collected that survived the Lindley Hall fire of 1924.
  • Textures and Slab Formed Planters, Judy Wojcik, Associate Professor of Art | Center for Visual and PerformingArts, Clay Studio in Room 102

    Experienced and non-experienced makers are welcome! Explore texture and the use of templates to create slab formed planters. The planters will be glazed and donated to Earlham’s Greenhouse plant sale. Limited to 20 participants.

  • How Can Alumni Help Earlham? A Discussion with Alumni Council, Landrum Bolling Center, Room 201Members of the Earlham College Alumni Council (AC) invite alumni, students, faculty and staff to a discussion forum, with the intent of learning about Alumni Council objectives and goals for upcoming year and beyond.  Additionally, the AC community welcomes the opportunity to further understand what the Earlham community desires from a strong alumni group, how the community would like to participate in alumni council and overall become and/or stay involved in the Earlham community.

Fellowship with EC faculty, students and administrators of the IEJ, Japanese Studies, Japan Study and SICE in celebration of the 60th Anniversary of Japan Study and the 50th Anniversary of SICE.     Learn how to identify a few of the common native trees of east-central Indiana, and a little bit about their ecology, uses, and conservation.

  • Earlham History Trivia Throwdown, Karla Fribely ’03, Instructional Technologies Director and Seminaries Librarian & Amy Bryant, Library Director | Richmond Room, Landrum Bolling Center

    Think you know a lot about Earlham? Gather a group of classmates or family to compete in the libraries’ fast-paced trivia game to crown one team the ultimate champions of Earlham History. There will be fabulous prizes. No team? Just bring yourself and we’ll match you with one.

  • American Jewish Pacificism: The Quaker Connection, Elliot Ratzman, Chair in Jewish Studies | Center for Science and Technology, room 103

    In the 1930s, a Cincinnati-based rabbi collaborated with Rufus Jones, the AFSC, and others to address Nazi antisemitism in unusual ways: by engagement and outreach. My research on Rabbi Abraham Cronbach on the history of organized Jewish pacifism has resulted in some surprising discoveries about the quixotic projects of pacifists. In this presentation, I share some of my research, along with looking at how religious Jews made the case that Judaism was a pacifist religion.

    Come try your hand at playing our Javanese gamelan (a large percussion orchestra from Indonesia). We will learn a simple piece from the traditional repertoire of central Java. Wrap-up your Homecoming weekend with a relaxing paddle on Richmond’s Middlefork Reservoir! Join EC Outdoor Ed as we take canoes out on the water to enjoy a beautiful *knocks on wood* fall morning! Feel free to bring your own watercraft or share one of ours! Other recommended items to bring include sun protection, a full water bottle, and if you’d like, a picnic brunch!
