Over decades, our community has developed intentional global influences and connections.

An Earlham education brings the world to Earlham and Earlham to the world. Our students come from over 30 countries and 40 different U.S. states, and more than 60 percent of our students spend a semester or more studying away on one of our nationally-recognized off-campus study programs. Because we believe it’s not just what’s on the syllabus—it’s who’s in the classroom.

The power of our purpose is rooted in our Quaker values—what we call our Principles and Practices.

No, you don’t need to be a Quaker to be an Earlhamite. In fact, many of us aren’t. Earlhamites come from all faiths and no faith, from various political and socio-economic backgrounds, and many different sexual, gender, racial and ethnic identities. So what is it that unites us? Our shared desire to live by some core values:

— Respect for Persons
— Integrity
— Peace and Justice
— Simplicity
— Community

The diversity of Earlham’s students, faculty and staff—coupled with our Quaker heritage of community—creates dynamic, rich, lifelong relationships.

There’s a Quaker belief that each one of us is a teacher, capable of bringing our own unique knowledge and understanding to the table. At Earlham, we hold that to be a powerful truth. From the college president to your professors, to students and staff, we’re each expected to contribute our voice and understanding to this shared enterprise. It’s one of the reasons we’re all on a first-name basis—no titles here.

Our academics are rigorous, but it’s not for the sake of “separating the weak from the strong” like some elite colleges.

Our academics are rigorous because we care about the members of our community, and we want each person to reach their individual potential in order to live their fullest life. Rigor at Earlham means challenging conventional views, encouraging critical thinking and raising the bar so students do more than they previously expected of themselves—all with the mentorship and support of our community.
