Outcomes

At Earlham College, outcomes are measured not only by career success, but by impact. Earlham graduates become scientists, artists, diplomats, entrepreneurs, educators and advocates who shape their fields and the world around them. Their achievements include some of the world’s most recognizable awards, including the Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize, Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Golden Globe Award.

Notable Alumni

  • Michael C. Hall ’93, Award-winning actor known for acclaimed performances on stage and screen, including leading roles in DexterSix Feet Under and numerous Broadway productions. 
  • Simone Leigh ’90, Internationally celebrated artist and sculptor whose work exploring Black identity, history and womanhood has been featured at major museums and exhibitions around the world, including the Venice Biennale.
  • Summia Tora ’20, The first Rhodes Scholar from Afghanistan, Summia is an internationally recognized advocate for refugees and women’s rights and the founder of the Dosti Network, which has supported Afghan families seeking safety, education and humanitarian aid following the fall of Kabul. Her work has earned recognition from Forbes’ “30 Under 30 Asia,” the BBC’s “100 Women” list and global policy organizations focused on human rights and refugee advocacy. 
  • Liza Donnelly ’77, Groundbreaking cartoonist and writer known for her influential work with The New Yorker and for advancing the visibility of women in political and cultural commentary through illustration. 
  • Margaret Hamilton ’58, Pioneering computer scientist who led development of onboard flight software for NASA’s Apollo missions and helped establish the field of software engineering. 
  • Mat Johnson ’93, Acclaimed novelist and comic book writer whose work blends history, satire and social commentary, earning national recognition for books including Pym and Loving Day
  • Sara Gelser Blouin ’94, Oregon state senator and nationally recognized advocate for survivors of sexual harassment and assault whose leadership helped drive accountability and reform during the political #MeToo movement. She was featured on the cover of Time magazine as one of “The Silence Breakers,” the publication’s 2017 Person of the Year.
  • Cyrus Buckman ’18, The first student from Ghana to earn Stanford University’s prestigious Knight-Hennessy Scholarship, Buckman is pursuing an M.D. and MBA at Stanford with a focus on expanding healthcare access in underserved communities around the world. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate in biochemistry, he has led global health initiatives in Peru and across Africa and credits Earlham’s global perspective and mentorship for shaping his path in medicine and public service. 
  • David Matthews ’65, Pioneering structural biologist and biopharmaceutical entrepreneur whose foundational research contributed directly to the rapid development of Paxlovid, Pfizer’s oral antiviral treatment for COVID-19.
  • Team Magic Bus: Iman Cooper ’15, Sonia Kabra ’16, Leslie Ossete ’16 and Wyclife Omondi ’17, In 2016, Team Magic Bus won the $1 million Hult Prize — the world’s largest student competition for social entrepreneurship — for developing a mobile ticketing platform designed to improve public transportation access and efficiency in Kenya. Their idea later evolved into BuuPass, a leading transportation booking platform serving travelers across East Africa.

Of those, 69% were working or volunteering and 31% were continuing their education.
