Student-Designed and Initiated Courses

Self-directed learning can be one of the most important aspects of a liberal arts education. Student-designed and initiated courses are valuable in that they encourage and require students to take responsibility for their educational process. Additionally, these courses provide opportunities for students to augment the existing curriculum to better suit their individual educational interests. Both the design and the completion of student- designed and initiated courses are educational experiences.

  • Students wishing to petition the Curricular Policy Committee (CPC) for approval of their student-designed and initiated course should submit proposal forms available at Community Documents.
  • Proposals must be submitted in .pdf format via email to the convener of CPC by the end of the fourth week of the semester prior to the semester in which the course is to be offered.
  • Student-led courses may be offered only on a Credit/No Credit basis and do not fulfill General Education Requirements. Only one academic credit hour is allowed for these courses and students leading these courses may earn only two academic credit hours. The enrollment is limited to 12.
