Independent Study is a form of study by special arrangement with a member of the teaching faculty. Students must file a petition for Independent Study (available in the Registrar’s Office). IS 285 is appropriate for beginning work in an area; IS 385, intermediate work; and IS 485, advanced work. Students may earn up to three credits and are advised to enroll in only one Independent Study each semester. These studies receive a standard letter grade.
An internship is any experience in which a student learns by taking on the responsible role of worker in an organization and observing and reflecting on the experience. Expected outcomes of such experiences include increased self-esteem and personal growth derived from successfully meeting new interpersonal and intellectual challenges, acquisition of particular skills and knowledge, exposure to various work roles and career choices, and service to a particular community or group.

The Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program is designed to prepare students who have traditionally been underrepresented in graduate studies for graduate work leading to a Ph.D. As participants in the program, students will have access to skills building courses and tutoring, research experiences with a faculty mentor, and individualized assistance through the graduate school application process. Students must meet the eligibility requirements for the program and must show an interest in attending graduate school. Program participation is limited to 25 students.
