Armen Sargsyan is only a junior at Earlham but has already achieved so much during his time here. The Armenian Davis United World Colleges scholar is a business and psychology double major and has:
- worked as a sales and marketing representative for Brinks Home;
- worked as a marketing specialist for Earlham’s Center for Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Creativity;
- interned with Power Systems Business Unit at Cummins Inc.; and
- served as the delegate to Namibia at Chicago Model United Nations for the committee, “Rewriting the Unwritten: A Summit on Information Ethics.”
He credits a lot of his success, including recently being nominated for the 2024 Hult Prize OnCampus Award and being nominated as program director, to his studies at UWC’s Dilijan campus. The Hult Prize OnCampus Program is a program that allows students to conduct local versions of the Hult Prize competition, the world’s largest student competition for social good.
“People think of the UWC as a school but it’s not,” Sargsyan said. “It’s a movement. There’s about 18 colleges in it total in the whole world. Their values and goals are to use education to unite people, cultures, nations, for a sustainable future and peace. It’s all about learning for your experience.”
Those values made the transition to Earlham all the easier for Sargsyan. “I’m very happy at Earlham,” he says. “Some of the values I see with UWC are integrity and respect. Those same values are also with Earlham. The College is deeply rooted in diversity and inclusion, and because of that I feel much more comfortable here than I would have at another college. Without UWC I would have struggled at Earlham.”
The junior and boxing club convener is doing anything but struggling, if his resume is anything to go off of, and he plans to continue to make moves in his final year at Earlham and beyond.
“This spring, I’ll be studying abroad in Italy, focusing on history and art,” Sargsyan said. “Those are areas unrelated to my major in business and psychology, but I wanted to broaden my perspective and explore new interests outside of my field.”
His post-grad goal is to get a full-time position in the United States, ideally in product management or a related field.
“Both UWC and Earlham have taught me two invaluable lessons: adaptability and independence,” he said. “UWC Dilijan gave me my first experience of living away from home, and Earlham has continued to challenge me to adapt to new environments and situations on my own. No matter what path I choose after Earlham, I’m confident that these qualities will be very important in helping me succeed.”
