Lori Schroeder named provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Earlham College

Lori Schroeder, an accomplished leader with more than 30 years of experience in higher education, will become the next provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Earlham College on July 1.

Schroeder is currently the provost and vice president for academic affairs at California State University Maritime Academy in Vallejo, California. Prior to that, she was the provost and dean of the college at Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana.

“Lori brings a breadth of senior leadership experience to the role,” Earlham President Anne Houtman said. “She has a deep commitment to shared governance and will be a strong advocate for Earlham’s teaching faculty. She is focused on promoting student success.”

Houtman notes that Schroeder’s candidacy for the role was met with enthusiasm across the Earlham community, including with incoming Earlham President Paul Sniegowski, who begins on August 1.

“I am thrilled to welcome Lori to Earlham and am confident that she and Paul will enjoy a strong partnership,” she said.

Schroeder was on the teaching faculty at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois for 21 years, serving as English department chair from 2003 to 2009 and associate dean of the college from 2010 to 2017. She began her career as an assistant professor of English at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York, and held full professorships at Knox and Franklin.

Her scholarship is focused on the intersections of gender, race and class in the works of Shakespeare.

Schroeder holds a Ph.D. in English language and literature from the University of Denver; a Master of Arts in English literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from Purdue University.

“I am humbled and honored to be asked to serve Earlham College in this important role. I have long admired the remarkable education offered by Earlham and am eager to work with incoming President Sniegowski, with faculty, and with other members of the community to support and advance the college’s truly inspiring academic mission.”
