Rodolfo Guzmán, Ph.D.

About me

I teach a variety of courses, with a special focus on the literature and film of Latin America. My research interests include the cultural and political production of the Criollos (a socio-racial stratum that originated during colonial times) in the Americas, the Afro-Hispanic’s experience, the Indigenous narratives of the Andean region, and the deconstruction of the historical discourse through the new historical novels and popular performances.

I enjoy watching classic movies, listening to radio stations from different countries and I love comedy!

As an experienced educator that has had the opportunity of teaching in institutions with varying philosophies and administrative structures, Earlham College stands out for the collegiality among faculty members, their impressive academic credentials and their dedication to the student’s intellectual and personal development. I also value the active involvement of Earlham’s faculty members in all aspects of the curriculum, policy-making and governance; an environment that is not easy to find nowadays in academic institutions. Just as important are the students who come to Earlham; their passion for learning and questioning the status quo always stimulates my daily life as a college professor and promotes my own intellectual growth and professional development.

Research projects

In my current research project I am studying the representation and evaluation of the Colonial period in 19th century historical novels. I am also interested in the cultural and political implications of international education and programs abroad in liberal arts colleges
