Setan Jawa (Satan of Java), a 2017 silent film by Indonesia’s most acclaimed art-film director, Garin Nugroho. Semi-improvised live music by Peni Candra Rini, whom the Kronos quartet has described as “one of the greatest singers in the world,” assisted by ethnomusicologist Andy McGraw, Javanese composer Wibowo, and our own Forrest Tobey. The dream-like film, which is rooted in traditional Javanese ways, tells the story of a young man who falls in love with a socially unobtainable woman and so makes a bargain with the devil (what could possibly go wrong?!). Contains stylized depictions of sex and violence. Running time 73 minutes, followed by a q&a with the performers.
