Earlham College offers additional $8K in scholarships to students within 150 miles

At a time when students and their families have concerns about traveling far from home to study, Earlham College has announced additional financial support to students in the region.

All students accepted to Earlham for the fall 2021 entering class and living within about 150 miles of campus will now receive the Heartland Region Scholarship, which is worth $8,000 over four years on top of any other merit-aid awarded by the College. The scholarship covers all students living in Indiana; eastern Ohio, including Columbus; northern Kentucky, including Lexington and Louisville; southern Michigan, including Detroit and Ann Arbor; and the Chicagoland region.

“We are committed to providing access to a top-tier liberal arts education to our neighbors at a time when students are reexamining their options in higher education,” said Earlham President Anne Houtman. “Earlham’s extraordinary learning opportunities and commitment to undergraduate teaching attract students from around the world, and our personalized attention and effective response to the pandemic make us an ideal option for students from our own backyard.”

In addition to the Heartland Region Scholarship, Earlham offers $20,000 to $30,000 per year in merit-based aid for eligible students. Eligible admitted students who apply to Earlham by Dec. 1 via the College’s “early action” program may be invited to attend a special scholarship day event in February 2021. This event offers students an opportunity to engage with faculty and interview or audition for scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 in art, community service and engagement, music, and theatre arts. Additionally, students demonstrating leadership in the areas of diversity and inclusion can earn full tuition for up to four years. While these interviews and auditions are typically held on campus, the COVID-19 pandemic may require some or all of them to be offered online.

“There has never been a better time for students in the Heartland to consider Earlham,” said David Hawsey, vice president of enrollment management. “We are excited to expand our recruitment efforts in this region and advocate for college-bound students so they can make sense of the choice ahead of them.”

Earlham offers its students a distinctive learning opportunity, Hawsey notes. Students benefit from a collaborative learning community that inspires and motivates them with transformative opportunities and experiences so they can become catalysts for good in a changing world. Earlham students also benefit from an opportunity rare in higher education: the offer of a funded internship, research experience or project virtually anywhere in the world.
