Earlham College ranks in nation’s Top 4 for study abroad participation

Earlham College students continue to participate in learning experiences abroad at a rate that far exceeds their peers at other colleges and universities, according to the Institute on International Education.

For the second straight year, Earlham ranks fourth in the U.S. among all baccalaureate granting colleges and universities for the percentage of students who study abroad, according to the Institute’s 2025 Open Doors report, which summarizes data from the 2023-24 academic year.

Sponsored by the U.S. State Department, the report divides the number of students participating in a credit-bearing study abroad program by the size of its graduating class in ranking each institution. Earlham’s study abroad participation is listed at a staggering 140 percent, which accounts for the number of students who study outside of the U.S. more than once. The report only includes domestic students who are studying abroad and does not include students studying in off-campus programs across the United States.

“Our off-campus programs are deeply integrated into the curriculum and a big part of the culture here,” said Jennifer Lewis, senior director of off-campus programs. “These experiences don’t happen in a vacuum. Our academic advisers often ask students not if, but where are you going. It’s the norm, not an exception.”

Earlham’s study abroad and off-campus study opportunities are located on every continent except Antarctica and are available in the form of short-term excursions, semester-long study and international internships and research experiences.

These experiences are fully integrated into the academic program, with students able to earn credit that applies to general education requirements and, in many cases, their major. Advising is structured to help students plan for off-campus study early in their academic careers, making participation a realistic option across disciplines.

Semester-long off-campus programs are included within standard tuition, with additional institutional support helping to cover program fees and living expenses. This approach allows students to study away for a semester or even a year at a cost comparable to remaining on campus. Students are typically responsible for travel, documentation, and personal expenses, though scholarships may be available to help reduce those costs.

Through the Epic Advantage program, all students are eligible for funding up to $5,000 that supports global and career-focused experiences, including internships, research and community-based projects.

In addition to these figures, Open Doors recently recognized Earlham College with a 75-year Seal of Excellence for the College’s commitment to international education reporting.
