Spring Camelan Concert
May 2 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Mixing It Up with Peni Candra Rini and Heri Purwanto
This spring, Earlham’s Javanese Gamelan Ensemble will be joined, once again, by the astonishing vocalist and composer Peni Candra Rini and master musician and teacher Heri Purwanto. The theme of this concert is mixture: of old and new; of tunings (the Javanese five-tone and seven-tone tunings, which are normally kept separate); of regional variants; of dance and concert versions; and of various genres within the traditional gamelan repertoire. (Our gamelan is a collection of visually stunning instruments from central Java, Indonesia. Most of these are tuned, bronze percussion, but it also includes drums, a flute, and stringed instruments; singing is also an important part of the tradition.)
