Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) with licensure preparation for grades 5-12

Do you strive to be a teacher who delights and inspires your students? Pair your passion for teaching with the study and development of substantive, engaging, cutting-edge pedagogy. In Earlham’s M.A.T. program, you’ll work with highly engaged faculty and a cohort of peers for a vibrant, empowering and intellectually rigorous education on your journey to become the best teacher you can be.

The M.A.T. program is an investment in yourself. Teaching is a noble pursuit, but it’s often stressful and underpaid. Earning a master’s degree as early as possible helps you:

  • maximize your lifelong earning potential by setting you up for salary bumps and advancement opportunities that often require a Master’s degree;
  • be more qualified and desirable to a bigger pool of schools;
  • have the flexibility to work in other states or even countries!

Plus, you can earn your degree in just 11 months.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the M.A.T. designed for?

The M.A.T at Earlham provides a path for teaching and career growth for:

  • Career-changers who already hold a bachelor’s degree but want to teach grades 5-12.
  • Recent college graduates (whether you majored in education or not!) who want to level up their starting salary, hire-ability, competitiveness and ability to work in more states (many require a master’s degree), in order to begin a career with advanced skills in pedagogy and classroom experience.

Does the M.A.T. lead to licensure?

Earlham’s M.A.T. program is an 11-month program that leads to a master’s degree and an Indiana teaching license (grades 5-12). The program offers licensure in social studies, English/language arts, mathematics, science, modern foreign languages, music, art, physical education, business, and computer science at the middle and high school levels. If you’d like to pursue licensure in another state, our faculty will help you find and meet the requirements.

Why should I get an M.A.T.?

An M.A.T. will help you:

  • Level up your ability to inspire your students
  • Advance your career and expand your career opportunities
  • Increase your opportunities for a higher salary
  • Develop a stronger curriculum and improve your skills in classroom management

Will I get hands-on classroom experience?

M.A.T. graduates are immensely well-prepared for their first year of teaching. Besides engaging in rigorous coursework, candidates plan and lead a summer enrichment program with high school students and complete a year-long placement at a local middle or high school. Under the guidance of their supervisor and mentor teacher, candidates gradually gain responsibility in the classroom, eventually assuming a full-time teaching load in the spring semester.

Is the M.A.T. accredited?

The M.A.T. Program is fully accredited by the State of Indiana.
