New Student Orientation

Welcome to your guide to New Student Orientation (NSO) at Earlham! As you begin your Earlham journey, our NSO staff are dedicated to helping you get acquainted with the people, places and services that will help you on your path to graduation.

Fall 2024 New Student Orientation will be:

August 14 for international students

• August 17 for domestic students

Make sure you have your calendars marked and know what to expect when arriving on campus.

NSO 2024 Schedules

The official NSO 2024 Schedule is ready—which means it’s time to get your packing list together!

International Student Orientation
Wednesday, Aug. 14 – Friday, Aug. 16

9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Airport shuttles for unaccompanied students
DAY, CVG, IND airports

We will help arrange a ride to campus and lunch for students flying alone.

 

1 – 4 p.m.
Arrival and move-in
Student Life Office, Earlham Hall

Check in with the Student Life Office on the main floor of Earlham Hall to obtain the International NSO schedule and gain access to the residence halls. NSO leaders will be available to help you with move-in during this time.

 

3 – 4 p.m.
Campus tour
Admission Office, Tyler Hall

Take a break from unpacking to join one of our regularly scheduled admissions tours. Learn your way around campus and hear about Earlham from the perspective of a current student.

 

4 – 5:30 p.m.
Check-in with International Student Advisers
LBC 124

*Bring visa, passport, I-20, I-901 SEVIS fee receipt.

 

5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Dinner with NSO leaders
Dining Hall, Earlham Hall 

Get to know other new international students as NSO student leaders answer your questions about Earlham and what to do before classes start.

 

6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Free Store “shopping”
Dennis Hall

Once you’ve unpacked, you may realize you’re missing something—but before you spend any money, shop Earlham’s Free Store for necessities.

 

8 p.m.
Relax!

Enjoy your first evening on campus and make sure you’re well-rested for another day of orientation tomorrow!

Guide to Settling into Your New Home
Multicultural Resource Center, Runyan Center

Stop by to learn about:

  • Phone plans.
  • Bank information.
  • Setting up your dorm room.
  • Making a shopping list for Walmart.
  • How to pay for things (cash vs. cards).
  • How to add devices to WiFi.

Lunch with NSO leaders / Family lunch with ISAs and Admissions

1:30 – 3:30 p.m.
Student Services Campus Tour
Earlham Hall Lobby

NSO leaders will take you to various Earlham offices to ensure you have everything you need before classes begin.

 

3:30 – 5:30 p.m.
Necessity shopping in Richmond (Walmart, Best Buy)
Meet at Public Safety

Need last-minute essentials from Walmart, Best Buy or another Richmond store? Our NSO leaders are available to take you shopping.

 

5:30 – 7 p.m.
Dinner with NSO leaders
Dining Hall, Earlham Hall

Get to know other international students beginning their first semester at Earlham. NSO student leaders will help you learn about Earlham College and what to do before classes start.

 

7 – 8 p,.m.
Campus tour (optional)

Evening activity: soccer scrimmage/yard games

Work awards & on-campus employment

Learn about employment regulations as an F1 student, the many on-campus job opportunities, and how to apply for them.

 

10:45 a.m. – Noon
Adjusting to Being away from Home with Counseling Services
Multicultural Resource Center, Runyan Center

When moving to a new place, it’s natural to experience adjustment issues and homesickness. Learn about strategies you can employ and resources available to you with one of our counselors.

 

Noon – 1 p.m.
Lunch with Metz Manager Alexis Maitlen
Friends Room B, Dining Hall

Learn about meal plans, Quaker points and the variety of food options available in the Dining Hall.

 

1 – 2:30 p.m.
Culture Shock
Multicultural Resource Center, Runyan Center

Cultural norms vary from place to place. Discuss cultural norms around race, gender, sexuality, etc, and how to best adjust from one cultural lens to another.

 

2:45 – 3:45 p.m.
Necessary details (follow-up)
Multicultural Resource Center, Runyan Center

What are your banking options? How do you set up phone service? How do you travel around Richmond or back and forth to airports? This session will help answer all of your questions about living in a new place.

 

4 – 5:30 p.m.
Explore Richmond with NSO leaders
Public Safety

Explore Richmond with the NSO leaders as they show you Earlhamites’ favorite spots for coffee, food and off-campus fun.

 

5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Getting here?

First things first—let’s get you to campus! Earlham is located on National Road 40, not far from I-70. We are in the Eastern Time Zone.

Flying?

Richmond is situated near three international airports, including Dayton, Indianapolis and Cincinnati. If you will need transportation from the airport to Earlham, please consider flying into Dayton so you can catch one of our provided shuttles or arrange for a charter van.

If you plan to send baggage and parcels ahead, please send them directly to Earlham College at the following address, labeled with your name:

The package should not weigh more than 70 pounds (or 32 kilograms). Please be sure to include an identification tag on all of your luggage.
