Exploring the Human Side of Medicine
Ever shadowed rising star doctors in the field? Rode in an ambulance (and not as a patient)? Aouss Azzouz has, and he can tell you all about it during his segment on unique academic programs at Earlham. He’s using his applied minor in medical humanities to get a leg up on medical school.
From Earlham College to Med School

Andrew Belec ’22
After graduating with a degree in Biochemistry, Andrew secured a position at the University of Pennsylvania in a research lab. Since 2022, he has been working alongside a cardiothoracic surgeon to aid recovery in patients post-heart attack by reducing inflammation and improving long-term mortality after a key heart injury.
“Earlham is great at providing the tools you need to be successful in pre-med career paths. They offer a wide variety of health experiences to help you discern your path and give you additional support throughout those processes. I appreciated both the technical and the social and emotional support in my pre-med and pre-health careers, and incorporating what I learned at Earlham in the field has been a really enjoyable experience for me.”

Drenushe Krasnlql-Vanmeter ’21
Drenushe’s biochemistry major and medical humanities minor at Earlham have catapulted her into a thriving career after graduation. As a senior research assistant at Schepends Eye Institute, which is part of Harvard Medical School, Krasniqi-Vanmeter is engaged in cutting-edge work exploring various blinding diseases that affect the optic nerve.
After experiencing the Kosovo War as a child, she is also passionate about sharing survivor stories and shining a light on the trauma of war. She is currently collaborating with Dr. Feride Rushiti, a renowned advocate for trauma survivors who has just been nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, on a project that aims to digitally archive the stories of survivors of the Kosovo War. In addition to Drenushe’s medical acumen, she is part of an incredible movement for justice and healing.
“Earlham was critical in my journey because they taught me that education goes beyond the classroom. I learned that the support of a community is crucial, and being able to reach out to mentors for life is a rare privilege. Furthermore, my experience at Earlham shaped not only my academic path, but also my commitment to equity and justice. I learned that diversity is about a community that appreciates differences and listens to those voices that historically have been unheard.”

Cyrus Buckman ’18
After graduating from Earlham with a degree in biochemistry, Cyrus was accepted into Stanford University’s prestigious Knight-Hennessy Scholarship program, receiving a free tuition scholarship for up to three years of study, including stipends to offset the cost of living and travel. As a Ph.D. and MBA candidate at Stanford University, he credits Earlham’s opportunities to participate in research, internships and off-campus travel as a factor that helped him stand out among other applicants for the scholarship.
“The Earlham Center for Global Health and the opportunities they have for students really set me apart from other applicants and gave me the confidence I needed to demonstrate my interest in the medical field. My pre-health advisors didn’t forget about me when I graduated. As an international student, they gave me advice that helped me choose the right graduate schools to apply to for scholarships.”
