The U.S. News & World Report “Best Colleges” guidebook for 2023 recognizes Earlham’s longstanding excellence in affordability, teaching and commitment to enrolling a richly diverse student body.

The College is once again ranked among U.S. News’ Top 100 national liberal arts colleges. Earlham ranks 81st overall among all national liberal arts colleges, improving 11 places from the previous year’s guide. Earlham also ranks 43rd for best value; fourth for most international students; 60th for ethnic diversity; 38th for best undergraduate teaching and 13th for A-Plus Schools for B Students. Schools included on the A-Plus Schools for B Students ranking are recognized for having a holistic admissions policy that goes beyond grades.

“Throughout our proud, 175-year history, we have attracted outstanding students from across the world who are seeking a life-changing education,” Earlham President Anne Houtman said. “This recognition by U.S. News & World Report is an acknowledgement of the strength of our intellectual community and our capacity to inspire students to be catalysts for good in the world.”

Every Earlham student embarks on an Epic Journey, a framework for student success that is deeply rooted in the liberal arts. The four-year experience combines Earlham’s nationally recognized classroom experience with important career-discerning opportunities that prepare students exceptionally well for post-graduate success.

Every student’s journey is different and shaped by their distinct interests and career goals. Central to the student experience is the Epic Advantage, which provides up to $5,000 for every student to participate in an internship, student-faculty research experience or other career-discerning experience. Additional international travel experiences for student-athletes and first-generation students are also available as part of the journey.

New to the journey this fall is a more holistic approach to advising, including informal mentors called Epic Guides, many of whom are administrators on campus, and My Epic Journey, a platform that allows students and their advisers to track out-of-class engagement to ensure student engagement and early interventions for students who are at risk.

To compile the rankings, U.S. News compares thousands of bachelor’s degree-granting institutions from across the United States on dozens of measures of academic quality. These rankings heavily favor schools that are successful at retaining and graduating students while providing them with access to quality, full-time instructors. Outcomes are the mostly highly weighted ranking factor, contributing 40% to each school’s overall score.
