Alumni awards<\/h1>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Earlham College Alumni Council gives up to three alumni awards each year to Earlhamites who have demonstrated excellence or achievement in a chosen career, and\/or active service to Earlham College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Recognition Committee will review each nomination and make recommendations to the Alumni Council for final approval. Awards are presented at a ceremony held during Homecoming and Reunion Weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nominator may be contacted by the Recognition Committee for additional information. Nominations must be received by December 31 to be honored in the following year and will be considered for up to three years. The nomination will then become defunct unless renewed by the nominator or a member of the Recognition Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, the College is pleased to honor Alice Wong ’96 <\/strong>and Daniel Hunter ’01<\/strong> as recipients of Earlham’s Outstanding Alumni Award. Randall ’68 and Alice Shrock ’68<\/strong> are recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award. Read their bios below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outstanding Alumni Award<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Alice Wong ’96<\/h4>\n

Alice Wong is a disabled activist, media maker, and consultant. She graduated from Earlham in 1996 and is the founder and director of the Disability Visibility Project (DVP).<\/p>\n

Alice is the host, writer, and co-audio producer for the Disability Visibility podcast. She is the editor of Resistance and Hope: Essays by Disabled People<\/em> and Disability Visibility: First-Person
\nStories from the Twenty-first Century<\/em>, and the author of a memoir, Year of the Tiger: An
\nActivist\u2019s Life. <\/em><\/p>\n

Alice is also a co-partner in three projects: DisabledWriters.com, a resource to help editors connect with disabled writers and journalists; #CripLit, a series of Twitter chats for disabled writers with novelist Nicola Griffith; and #CripTheVote, a nonpartisan online movement encouraging the political participation of disabled people with co-partners Andrew Pulrang and Gregg Beratan.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n \n

Outstanding Alumni Award<\/h3>\n

Daniel Hunter ’01<\/h4>\n

Daniel Hunter is an activist\u2019s activist\u2014always aiming to empower individuals, engage grassroots organizations, and embolden institutions to make change for good.<\/p>\n

The son of Earlham employees, Daniel graduated from Earlham in 2001. He works with 350.org to actively fight climate change and has written multiple books, including the Climate Resistance Handbook<\/em> and Building a Movement to End the New Jim Crow<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Daniel has campaigned against the U.S. PATRIOT Act, worked to build more affordable housing in Philadelphia, and fought for public sector employees with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. He is tireless in his work around the globe supporting and organizing direct action for social movements.<\/p>\n

Daniel represents Earlham with every fiber of his being.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n \n

Distinguished Service Award<\/h3>\n

Randall ’68 and Alice Shrock ’68<\/h4>\n

The longest-serving faculty pair in the U.S., Randall and Alice Shrock, both Earlham Class of 1968, shared a history professorship at Earlham for 40 years\u2014from 1973 until their retirement in 2013. Their impact on Earlham has been profound and undeniable, as generations of Earlhamites have benefited from their guidance.<\/p>\n

Randall and Alice met at Earlham as students. Both Quakers and history majors with an interest in teaching, they graduated from Earlham in 1968. The pair then went on to earn their Ph.D.\u2019s in 1973 and jointly applied for an open position at Earlham in the history department.<\/p>\n

Randall, whose focus was colonial and antebellum U.S. history, helped found Earlham\u2019s Master of Arts in Teaching program. Alice, whose focus included women\u2019s history and museum studies, was also an associate dean for program development and worked with the Ford\/Knight collaborative research program.<\/p>\n

Through their long and dedicated service to Earlham, Randall and Alice both directed fellowships and mentored many history majors. Randall has also served Earlham\u2019s Alumni Council as a representative to the Earlham Board of Trustees.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n
