SUMMARY:Shadow and Light: Music from Theater\, Film\, and Dance
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven\, Mendelssohn\, Hisaishi\, Barber\, Herrmann\, Copland The Earlham Symphony Orchestra\, with guest community and professional musicians\, performs a suite of pieces associated with stage and screen. They alternate in mood between light and shadow\, reflecting the depths of human experience. Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and Mendelssohn’s Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream were both composed for staged performances of the plays\, but while the Mendelssohn is filled with the magic and humor of Shakespeare’s fairy world\, Beethoven confronts us with the fate of a man condemned to death for standing up to the forces of political repression. Joe Hisaishi’s theme music from Howls Moving Castle reflects the lightness and color of that fantasy world\, whereas two other film scores bring us into more shadowy territory. Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings\, now iconically associated with the Vietnam war film Apocalypse Now\, is a powerful expression of transcendent sorrow. Excerpts from Bernard Herrmann’s score to Hitchcock’s Psycho deliver a powerful investigation of a disturbed mind\, using famously dissonant music written for strings alone. The concert concludes with Aaron Copland’s Suite from his ballet Appalachian Spring\, a masterpiece of American music that depicts the lives of settlers in 19th Century rural Pennsylvania. But even here\, the score projects shadows of an upcoming war. This work concludes with the hopeful message conveyed by the variations on the Shaker hymn “Simple Gifts\,” reminding us of life’s purpose and meaning in the midst of shadow and of light.

SUMMARY:Spring Camelan Concert
DESCRIPTION:Mixing It Up with Peni Candra Rini and Heri PurwantoThis spring\, Earlham’s Javanese Gamelan Ensemble will be joined\, once again\, by the astonishing vocalist and composer Peni Candra Rini and master musician and teacher Heri Purwanto. The theme of this concert is mixture: of old and new; of tunings (the Javanese five-tone and seven-tone tunings\, which are normally kept separate); of regional variants; of dance and concert versions; and of various genres within the traditional gamelan repertoire. (Our gamelan is a collection of visually stunning instruments from central Java\, Indonesia. Most of these are tuned\, bronze percussion\, but it also includes drums\, a flute\, and stringed instruments; singing is also an important part of the tradition.)

SUMMARY:Alumni Event Opportunity: Hiking Hadrian's Wall
DESCRIPTION:2026 Alumni TripTrip Overview\nSpend six days hiking the best of Hadrian’s Wall Path\, the most scenic 55 miles of the path that follows the remains of the ancient Roman wall constructed by the emperor Hadrian in 122 CE.  We will walk an average of nine miles per day with light day packs rather than full backpacks\, and our evenings will be spent in picturesque bed & breakfasts in the English countryside. On the way we’ll learn about the history of Roman Britain as we encounter its footprints tucked within churches\, amidst rolling hills\, and alongside lambing sheep. We will begin and end our trip in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh\, where we will meet up with the 2026 Epic Advantage students who will have just completed their own hike of Hadrian’s Wall Path. While there\, we will have the opportunity to explore Edinburgh castle\, the National Museum of Scotland\, and to enjoy world-class food along the Royal Mile.\n Trip Cost\nWe estimate the following trip costs (we will know more when we begin booking):\n \n Sharing a double room for all 12 nights: $3500\n Having your own room for the 4 nights in Edinburgh: $4000\n\nThis estimate does not include air travel\, but does include hotel reservations\, entrance tickets\, and in-country transit\, and a $50 per diem for meals.\n Trip HighlightsWe will hike about nine miles per day. The longest day is twelve miles. The shortest is five. We partner with a local company who will bring take our bags each morning and drop them at that evening’s bed & breakfast\, leaving us free to walk largely unencumbered through the English countryside.\n\nWe will see the most intact portions of Hadrian’s Wall\, Arthur’s Seat\, the Vindolanda Roman Fort\, a temple of Mithras\, Lanercost Priory\, and more turrets & milecastles than you can count.
