Sprint Tri & 5K
It’s spring time, which mean it’s time for Earlham College Wellness Programs to host the Annual Sprint Triathlon! The event is open to all current students, staff, faculty and the Wayne County community. The Sprint Triathlon will consist of a 400-meter swim, 12-mile bike ride, and then a 5k (3.1 mile) run. The Sprint Triathlon can be completed as an individual or as a team of people who complete one or more events. If you do not plan to bike or swim, a 5k-only registration is available as well. All participants will receive a shirt for participating.

Health and Safety
- Participation in Earlham College AWC activities, including the use of facilities and equipment, is completely voluntary. There are risks and hazards, minor and serious, associated with participation in fitness activities. Participants voluntarily assume all responsibility and risk of loss, damage, illness and/or injury to person or property associated with the participation in the Sprint Triathlon and 5k.
- Participants are advised to check with a medical professional before starting any exercise program.
- Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately and drink water before, during, and after exercise.
Bring gear
Some of the mandatory gear that you will need is:
- Swim goggles
- Swim cap
- Bike
- Bike helmet
- Shoes to wear on the bike or bike cleats
- Running shoes (if different from bike shoes)
- Participation number
- We will provide Sharpie for participation number
Some other gear you might want to consider is:
- Sunglasses
- Water bottle for your bike
- Energy gels / bars
- Quick shoe ties
Event instructions
5K Instructions
You will receive an event t-shirt and participation number at packet pickup. You must wear your number on the front of your body on your outermost layer of clothing or skin (Sharpie) so that you are timed correctly.
The start line for the 5k will be located outside the south exit doors of the Athletics and Wellness Center. (The back side of the AWC, the side of the building closest to the football field.) The 5K will begin at 8:30 a.m. Please review the course maps on the event webpage, so you know the course. (The course will be marked on the road and have turn signs at each turn. Please review the maps so you know the course.)
Triathlon instructions
You will receive the following items at packet pickup – event t-shirt, and a participation number. You must wear your number on the front of your body on your outermost layer of clothing or skin (Sharpie) so that you are timed correctly.
Transition will open at 6:45 a.m. and close at 7:45 a.m. you must rack your bike on the bike racks in transition. You must gather your race gear around your bike in transition (within 1 foot from each side of your bike). It is mandatory that you wear your helmet on the bike. No helmet, no racing.
Swim
The swim will begin promptly at 8 a.m. Athletes will line up according to participation number /predicted swim time and will enter the pool one at a time for the 400-meter swim. There will be 2 participants per lane. You will swim in one lane, and stay in your lane throughout the 400 meters. You will circle the lane as to not run into another competitor. A lap counter will be provided for you. No swimming aids are allowed (swim paddles, pool buoys, flippers, lifejackets, etc.)
After the swim, you proceed through the exit doors of the Weber Pool on your way out to transition. If you would like you can leave a bag in the locker room with gear to change into after the swim. (Possibly warmer or rain resistant gear with pending conditions). You will then exit with all your gear and leave it in transition.
Bike
You will put all of your bike gear on in transition and then exit to the course. You are not allowed to mount / be on your bike until you reach the mount / dismount line as indicated by the volunteers. You will proceed down the South West G Street entrance and follow the bike route (spray painted on the street). Traffic will not be stopped / controlled at intersections though traffic should be low on the bike route but please be cautious. The route is mostly flat with a few medium to large hills. The course is an out-and-back.
Afterwards you will proceed back through transition before exiting on the run.
Run
You will exit transition and return back onto the road course previously used for the biking portion. There will be water/aid stations on the course. You will end back at the original starting area.
Post race
There will be post-race food and refreshments available inside and your participation shirt and giveaways will be available for pickup.
Parking
Parking is available at several lots around campus. Two lots north of the wellness center are accessible through the South West D Street entrance, and a lot is available south of the wellness center at the South West G Street entrance.
Packet pickup
Packet pickup and registration will be from 6:45 a.m. – 7:45 a.m. for the triathlon and the 5k. These activities will be located in Weber Pool of the Athletics and Wellness Center.
Weather
The average weather forecast is a high of 62 and a low of 44 with partly cloudy skies during the event. We will hold the event regardless of rainy conditions. In the event of lightning or severe storms (we do not foresee any of that happening), the event would be delayed or canceled. Please dress accordingly. Triathletes will have a chance to change in the locker rooms as they leave the swim if they would like to do so.
