Virtual Commencement to be held May 9

May 05, 2020

Earlham College will celebrate the Class of 2020 with a virtual Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 9, as a result of the closure of campus due to the COVID-19 pandemic and associated travel restrictions. There will be no event on campus.

The virtual event will be accessible at earlham.edu/commencement and will follow the College’s traditional timeline for commencement exercises: A baccalaureate video will be shared at 10:30 a.m. (Eastern), and a graduation ceremony video will start at 2:30 p.m. (Eastern).

During the graduation ceremony, each graduate’s name and degree will be announced. Graduates from the undergraduate college, the School of Religion and the Graduate Programs in Education will be recognized.

A link to the Commencement program will be available on the commencement website the morning of May 9.  Printed programs will be mailed later with diplomas and t-shirts for the graduates.

Earlham is committed to inviting the Classes of 2020 back to campus for celebrations at a later date when operations return to normal.

Members of the senior baccalaureate class at Earlham held an impromptu mini-Commencement on Friday, March 13, before heading to their homes around the globe. The event was entirely organized by students, with support from faculty and staff.

In following federal and state action to stop the spread of COVID-19, the College has canceled face-to-face classes and college-sponsored events and travel for the remainder of the spring semester and continuing through summer.

All employees have been required to work from home with the exception of designated, “essential personnel” responsible for maintaining campus operations, ensuring business continuity, and supporting students who have been unable to return home. A re-opening plan will be announced in June.
