Interim Director of Health Services — Student Life

Earlham College is seeking an experienced healthcare professional to serve as Interim Director of Health Services in the Student Life Division. This is an 11-month (August through June) administrative faculty appointment averaging 30 hours per week. Salary is commensurate with experience, and includes a benefit package.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

The Interim Director of Health Services is responsible for the overall management of Earlham Health Services (EHS). Duties include the following:


  • Provides educational opportunities for the nursing staff in order to remain current on recommended treatments of care.
  • Coordinates care with our visiting physician, Dr. Windel Stracener, M.D., and with Pattie Young, PMHCNS-BC. This includes the development of policies and protocols when appropriate.
  • Hires and supervises student workers.


  • Cognizant of legal matters and sees that all functions of EHS are in compliance with accepted standards of practice and meet any state or federal regulations as well as limits imposed by the College’s insurance coverage.
  • Writes updates the EHS policy and procedural manual.
  • Updates standing orders on an annual basis in cooperation with Dr. Stracener.
  • Develops and maintains all forms used in EHS.


  • Responsible for the management of the budget. Cost containment is expected to limit expenditures to those allowed annually. Prepares a new budget annually. Processes time sheets for staff and student workers.


  • Orders all supplies as needed from vendors, which offer reasonable prices and reliable service.


  • Ensures that all charges are processed in a timely manner. Establishes pricing policies and also sees that all bills are paid.

Insurance Claims

  • Generates insurance statements as requested for both student and private insurance policies.

Coordination of activities with other departments

  • Coordinates immunization administration for students going on off campus programs with the Center for Global Engagement (CGE). Current information on health related topics is provided to CGE to minimize any health risks while off campus.
  • Copies physicals that are part of the student’s health record of students who are enrolled in Wilderness Program and gives them to the Wilderness Program Director.
  • Participates in the orientation of residence life staff and presents educational programs to the staff as requested by the Director of Residence Life.
  • As a member of the Student Life Division, participates in appropriate projects and activities.
  • Cognizant of health issues on an ongoing basis and informs appropriate individuals to protect the well being of all members of the Earlham community. This may include organizing the development of new policies at times.
  • Serves on various committees as appointed.
  • Interacts with parents or guardians of students in a professional and empathetic manner.


  • Functions as a staff nurse part of each week and administers care to students.


  • Works with Counseling and Wellness Programs regarding educational programs on an ongoing basis with emphasis on wellness and prevention and topics of interest to the College population. This includes HIV, drug and alcohol education to meet federally mandated education policies. Evaluates the effectiveness of the programs.
  • Provides current information on health issues by ordering appropriate brochures or literature or by creating such educational information.
  • Maintains files and lists of available information to enable students and staff to find information.
  • Assists students in obtaining health related information. This may include one-to-one instruction about a personal concern or research for the desired information.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse certification and a bachelor’s degree in nursing are required.
  • Managerial and teaching experience is preferred.
