Library Operations Assistant — Science and Technology Commons

Earlham College invites applications for the position of Library Operations Assistant (LOA) in the Science Technology Commons (STC) located in Earlham's new state-of-the art Center for Science and Technology (CST). This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week), 10-month hourly staff position with a starting rate of $11.82 per hour, with an increase to $11.97 per hour upon successful completion of 90-day introductory period. Compensation includes a benefit package.

The Library Operations Assistant will report to the Director of the Science Technology Commons. The LOA will work 20 weeks each semester, historically from August 5 - December 20 and January 5 - May 20.

For 2019-2020, the position is at a minimum of 20.0 hours per week with no benefits or possibly 37.5 hours per week with full benefits, to be determined.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the daily operations of the STC, including:
    • Supervising student workers.
    • Providing front-line academic poster printing services.
    • Participating in campus-wide provision of library and technology services.
  • Performing core responsibilities in STC including:
    • Managing daily operations of STC.
    • Assisting STC patrons with information needs about STC and CST.
    • Overseeing circulation system in STC (i.e., books, keys, circulate adapters, cables, cameras, clickers, and other instructional technology equipment) for teaching and research in collaboration with different science departments (i.e., calculators).
    • Monitoring appearance and working order of STC spaces/facilities.
    • Interacting with other campus offices such as Housekeeping and Maintenance, external suppliers, vendors, and repair persons as needed.
    • Reserving, checking out, supporting, and scheduling laptop cart/mobile labs and Earlham's Fishgold and Collaborative Computer lab for science classes and individual patrons (i.e., faculty and students).
    • Managing a growing collection of AV equipment.
  • Providing large-scale academic poster services: by printing posters for patrons, billing for printing, ordering and maintaining supplies.
  • Troubleshooting and/or coordinating technical responses for STC computing labs, laptops and printers.
  • Organizing and co-convening student luncheon meetings.
  • Training and supervising student workers in collaboration with the Director of STC.
  • Supporting Science Commons space reservation of key flexible community rooms and group study spaces,
  • Accounting responsibilities and clerical duties for the Science & Technology Commons.
  • Assisting in the management of Concerto (digital display/signage system).
  • Assisting in the preparation and facilitation of student and faculty workshops.
  • Coordinating/collaborating with Lilly Library staff to troubleshoot library computer system and to accomplish joint library activities.
  • Performing all other duties as assigned, based on experience and skill set of the final candidate.

Experience & Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred; a high school diploma or GED certificate is required.
  • Work experience in an educational or library setting is required.
  • Excellent people skills and a desire to provide exceptional customer service.
  • Service-oriented personality and ability to interact with diverse populations of users and varied personalities.
  • High level of integrity and ability to respect privacy of patrons.
  • Ability to learn and follow detailed procedures.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office-related software such as word processing, PowerPoint and spreadsheet programs, and aptitude for acquiring additional computer skills.
  • Facility for or ability to learn Web-based technologies and database software is preferred.
  • Basic understanding (or the ability to learn quickly) about classroom technology such as projectors and audio equipment is preferred.
  • Ability to train and supervise student employees and to create a supportive work atmosphere for the student workers.
  • Effective organizational skills.
  • Ability to attend to multiple tasks simultaneously and be on demand by library patrons at all times.
