Campus Store Supervisor — Events and Operations

Earlham College invites applications for the position of Campus Store Supervisor in the Office of Events and Operations. This is a full-time, hourly staff position with a full benefits package. The starting pay rate is $14.35 per hour, with an increase to $14.50 per hour upon successful completion of 90-day introductory period.

The Campus Store Supervisor assists the manager with all aspects of the Campus Store to ensure goals and objectives are being achieved, while adhering to all standard operating procedures set by the College. This includes, but is not limited to: customer service, human resources, operations, merchandising, loss prevention and safety.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintain consistency in day-to-day store and mail order operations, emphasizing exceptional customer service.
  • Supervision of sales clerks.
  • In the absence of the store manager, open and close the Campus Store.
  • Assist with coaching and training of all student and part-time workers on POS system, ensuring transactions are being completed accurately.
  • Oversee proper and accurate handling of daily sales receipts and associated paperwork.
  • Assist in inspiring and motivating store personnel to exceed sales goals by setting clear direction and communicating consistent priorities.
  • Help to leverage and assign resources to meet goals, i.e. payroll, expenses, people.
  • Assist the manager in obtaining and entering all textbook information from departments to ensure the College maintains compliance with the current Higher Education Opportunity Act by listing books needed for courses on website and allowing students to compare prices.
  • Process new merchandise (including quantity/quality confirmation, ticketing, selling floor preparation and shipment allocation), and accompanying documentation and follow-up on discrepancy resolution in a timely manner. Ensure shipments are on sales floor for purchase within 24 hours of receipt.
  • Process outgoing UPS shipments and book returns daily.
  • Assess selling floor merchandising needs and requests reorders accordingly, including products and selling tools — supplies, manuals and other forms of technology.
  • Assist store manager in special projects such as book signings, convocations and off-site selling tables.
  • Actively participate in annual inventory preparation and physical count(s) as needed.
  • Communicate regularly with the store manager concerning:
    • Inventory levels, i.e., fast- and slow-selling products or classifications, requests for out-of-stock products or products currently not a part of the merchandise assortment.
    • Ideas for improved customer service or selling floor presentation.
    • Other store-related issues.
  • Oversee maintenance and organization of stockroom and storage areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience & Qualifications

  • An associate degree or college-level work is required; a bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of retail supervisory experience, or a bachelor’s degree in retail management or related field.
  • Minimum of two years of retail sales experience.
  • Demonstrated superior customer service skills.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of retail software programs. (Knowledge of Booklog is desirable.)
  • Experience working in higher education and/or working with textbook adoption process.
  • Familiarity with financial accounting practices.

  • Knowledge and understanding of general retail merchandising principles and standard retail practices.

  • Commitment to honesty in handling inventory, supplies and revenues.
  • Experienced at public service and working with a highly diverse general public.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to multitask, prioritize and manage time.
  • Ability to operate point of sale (POS) register system with proficiency.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the store. This may include nights and weekends.
  • Ability to retrieve, lift and transport stock and packages on carts or flatbeds from storage locations to selling floor for display and sale.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions when Campus Store is crowded and maintain composure if customers become demanding.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends and evenings.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Physical ability to be on the sales floor for extended periods. This will include on a regular basis the ability to stand, walk, use hands for firm grasping, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.
  • Physical ability to occasionally sit, climb or balance, and bend, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
