Associate Dean for Student Diversity and Inclusion — Student Life

Earlham College is accepting applications for the position of Associate Dean for Student Diversity and Inclusion in the Student Life Division. This is a full-time, 12-month administrative faculty appointment. Salary is commensurate with experience and includes a full-benefit package.
This position provides outreach, education and programming to a highly diverse student body. Successful candidates will have the ability to build a strong rapport with the campus community and direct experience as a positive and effective advocate for under-represented students. This position reports to the Vice President of Student Life/Dean of Students.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Coordinates and develops campus cultural activities and programs celebrating diversity broadly, inclusive of race, ethnicity, LGBTQIAA, gender, ability, class and culture.
- Coaches students in their social, leadership, academic and identity development, and advocates for their holistic well-being.
- Facilitates trainings and workshops for student leaders broadly, i.e., residential staff, student government, student athletes and student organizations.
- Advises and assists student organizations associated with the Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion, such as Sociedad de Estudiantes Latino, Spectrum, Black Student Union, South Asian Student Union, etc.
- Supports and advises the Student Diversity Council, including bi-weekly meetings.
- Establishes and maintains opportunities for structured dialogue and/or the development of ongoing programmatic activities focused on respectful discourse and understanding, i.e., Sustained Dialogue or similar programs.
- Advises and collaborates with faculty around student issues and concerns.
- Promotes and contributes to student retention and success efforts.
- Serves as a member of the Student Life team, including meetings, retreats and trainings, and volunteers to assist with other major programs and events.
- Serves as an enthusiastic member of the campus-wide Diversity Progress Committee.
- Develops relevant learning outcomes and assessment.
- Serves as a member of the divisional on-call rotation.
- Cultivates positive, professional relationships with colleagues and faculty in support of student access and success.
- Title IX experience. Will participate on the Title IX investigation and prevention team.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience & Qualifications
- A master’s degree in student personnel, higher education administration, counseling or related field or equivalency in professional experience.
- A minimum of three years full-time professional, related experience; experience in working with student affairs/multicultural student affairs in a post-secondary setting.
- Understanding of the mission and values of a residential, liberal arts college.
- Demonstrated commitment to holistic student well-being.
- Experience in creating and implementing diversity education and leadership programs, i.e., Safe Zone/Ally, Sustained Dialogue, Diversity Peer Educators, Diversity Scholars, etc.; however, scholars with demonstrated leadership and administrative experience, relevant research and a successful record of classroom instruction and student mentorship, will also be considered.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong interpersonal and public relations skills.
- Experience with assessment and development of learning outcomes.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and dedication to the fields of student affairs and multicultural education.
- Demonstrated experience in planning and programming.
- Strong organizational skills.
- A reputation as a positive team player with a sense of humor, and a personal commitment to collaboration and integrity is essential.
- Candidates must embrace direct engagement of students and demonstrate a desire to form meaningful relationships with students, faculty and staff.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed to support student events.
- International immersion experiences, i.e., study abroad, volunteer service, etc.
- Fluency in a second language.
- Previous professional experience and/or scholarship in multicultural affairs, diversity education, identity formation or related work within higher education are highly preferred.
- Previous experience or engagement with Sustained Dialogue or similar program.
- Active participation and engagement in relevant student affairs professional associations.
- Crisis management, BIT (Behavioral Intervention Team)/Care team experience.
- Experience in conflict resolution and management.
