The Director of Student Engagement is primarily responsible for the support and oversight of a robust student leadership program, coordination of organizational advising and student activities in collaboration with the Director of Student Activities and Events. The Director will give particular attention and leadership in relation to DEI initiatives within the division and for student programming. The Director is expected to be an active contributor to overall goals, strategies and responsibilities of the Division of Student Life. This position reports to the Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students.
At all times, the Director models respect for student concerns, respectful engagement with College constituencies, and supports the College mission. Utilizing exceptional communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, the Director establishes collaborative relationships within the division as well as a variety of campus resources beyond Student Life.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Within the Division of Student Life, this position will create, develop and provide oversight of student leadership initiatives. Specifically:
- Support a student leadership curriculum, programs and concepts for the campus community in a manner that supports Earlham’s academic mission and goals.
- Manage, track and oversee multiple large budgets ranging from student fees, campus programming, and student organization budgets with the Director of Student Activities and Events.
- Audit, review and recreate risk management policies and training for student government and organizations in conjunction with the Department of Public Safety; advise Student Life colleagues as appropriate.
- Coordinates and develops campus cultural activities and programs celebrating diversity and promoting belonging broadly – inclusive of race, ethnicity, LGBTQ+, gender, ability, age, class, religious affiliation and culture.
- Train and serve as the faculty advisor for Earlham Student Government.
- Serve as the co-advisor for 50+ student clubs and organizations ranging from service, cultural, political, religious and special interest.
- Develop and coordinate bi-annual training for student leaders and faculty advisors.
- Assist the Director of Student Activities and Events with on-site support and supervision of events for the campus community.
- Assist with coordination of sending campus delegates to student activities conference(s).
- Work collaboratively with the other divisions of the College (such as the Center for Global and Career Education and the Center for Social Justice) to expand civic and community service locally and through national opportunities, i.e., alternative service breaks.
- Work collaboratively with Outdoor Education, Residence Life and other offices across campus to create and sponsor Earlham Excursions.
- Serve as part of the on-call rotation for crisis or critical incident response.
- Serve on the Campus Life Advisory Committee, Diversity Progress Committee, Homecoming Committee, and etc.
- Engagement with appropriate regional and/or national professional development organizations.

Experience & Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred Student Affairs, Higher Education, or related field of study.
- 5-7 years of relevant experience in Student Engagement or Student Leadership, with student programming and/or orientation is strongly desired.
- Ability to communicate successfully with people from diverse backgrounds and an expressed commitment to uphold and further Earlham’s Diversity Aspirations Vision Statement.
- Knowledge and commitment to student development theory and the changing needs of college students is essential.
- Ability to design, implement and assess training and programming curricula.
- Understanding of the liberal arts mission, and/or commitment to learning and supporting an educational model focused on the whole person and critical thinking.
- Successful experience at the collegiate level in the area of program coordination, and student organization advising.
- The successful candidate must possess strong interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in an organized manner.
- Previous experience related to diversity education and training; willingness to partner with campus colleagues in the co-curricular development of leadership and diversity competencies for students.
- Basic proficiency with technology and social media; previous budgetary management.
- Proven experience and competence in coordinating diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and educational programming.
- Direct experience advising student government; management of student leadership/organizations within a college or university environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience utilizing a theoretical foundation related to the principles and practices of leadership development and application; experience with Social Change model or similar is helpful.
- Previous experience with a values-centered advising model and engagement with teaching faculty on a highly diverse campus; international experience is a plus.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and/or experience contributing to broader campus service and professional organizations within student affairs and higher education.
- Familiarity with the principles of consensus, sustainability and a culture of global concern.
