Senior Career Coach (11 months, full-time)

The Senior Career Coach (SCC) works within the Center for Global and Career Education (CGCE), in the Career Education (CE) team, and assumes responsibility for a significant career-coaching case load. The SCC is also highly engaged in the development and delivery of the campus-wide approach to career education, assuming responsibility for a Career Community as well as taking the lead on developing curriculum for and instruction of credit-bearing Career Education courses.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Career Coaching (50%, approximately 20 hours per week)
Direct Career Coaching: Meet with and coach students in both one-on-one appointments and group settings and meetings, employing an appreciative advising model to provide developmentally appropriate advising, support, and mentorship of students as they explore academic, professional, and personal development. Support students in their processes of career discernment.
- Utilize Handshake for student appointment scheduling and tracking
- Participate in campus programming and classroom visits to address students’ Earlham Journeys, such as first-year seminars, initiatives related to the College Student Inventory (CSI), and more.
Ongoing Development of Self-Guided and Classroom Career-Discernment Modules: Create materials for students to access and employ in their own processes of career discernment, to be used in conjunction with in-person coaching and support from peer career coaches and all career coaches in the CGCE team. Produce plug-and-play modules for teaching faculty to use in classroom settings in which career discernment may be a part of the curriculum.
Career Education (15%, approximately 6 hours per week)
Career Community Administration: Convene an advisory team of faculty, alumni and/or employers for one Career Community (likely the Social Justice, Education, and Public Affairs Career Community). Develop and deliver timely and relevant career education/exploration resources and opportunities to students associated with the Career Community through various online platforms, email outreach, and in other venues.
- Stay up-to-date on available internship, research, and study abroad experiences related to assigned Career Community, as well as potential careers in that Community.
- Serve as the point person for campus event programming related to assigned Community, working in collaboration with the Center for Social Justice and other relevant campus units.
- Work with, hire, and supervise a small team of Peer Career Coaches (2-3) with the same Career Community assignment.
- Assist in training student Peer Career Coaches (all teams) on resources related to assigned Community.
- Develop and maintain relationships with faculty and other campus personnel in support of the overall purpose and goals of the assigned Career Community.
- Assist in developing and maintaining relationships with relevant employers and/or graduate/professional schools for the purpose of identifying internship and/or full-time employment opportunities for students within the assigned Career Community.
- Keep abreast of industry news and relay relevant information to student advisees.
Curriculum Development and Instruction (30%, approximately 12 hours per week)
Curriculum Development: Assist other team members in updating existing and developing new Career Education curricula, especially credit-bearing courses, to ensure alignment with and achievement of departmental learning outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with CGCE colleagues to understand departmental needs regarding curriculum.
- Draft necessary documents for Curricular Policy Committee (CPC) approval of updates to existing and new credit bearing courses.
Instruction: Assume primary responsibility for instruction of credit-bearing Career Education courses (under the EPIC course code).
- Adhere to all academic policies as determined by the Registrar’s office and the CPC including but not limited to: course registration, textbook submission, attendance reporting, grade reporting, and course evaluations.
- Work collaboratively with the Associate Director of Career Education to assign Peer Career Coaches (from one or more teams) to serve as Teaching Assistants and/or Graders, as needed.
- Note: Instructional duties may require some evening and/or weekend hours.
Assessment: Collaborate with other CGCE personnel in designing, implementing, and administering ongoing assessment of student learning and outcomes for all Career Education programming, especially credit-bearing courses.
Reporting: Take the lead in reporting on outcomes and assessment of all career education curriculum.
Other Duties (5%, approximately 2 hours per week)
- Professional development: Participate regularly in regional, national, or international professional development opportunities and networks.
- Board/committee service: Serve on various boards and committees, as appropriate to the CE, CGCE, and EPIC missions.
- Ad hoc assignments: Complete other duties as requested by the Senior Director.
Experience & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and at least introductory (1 year) experience in college-level career advising and/or a closely related field, such as: experiential education, internship programming, or human resources
- Demonstrated skill in and passion for working with undergraduate students
- Demonstrated interpersonal relationship-building skills and experience working with a wide range of constituents, including employers, faculty, students, and alumni
- Experience communicating with and supporting people from diverse backgrounds and an expressed commitment to uphold and further Earlham’s Diversity Aspirations Vision Statement
- Experience in curriculum development and instruction
- Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality
- Clear understanding of and affinity with the purposes and values of a private residential liberal arts college and a demonstrated ability to work with teaching faculty
- Experience and comfort with digital tools and technology, including social media
- Commitment to high visibility on campus and in the community
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced office
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills, particularly in translating the value of the liberal arts into graduate outcomes
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of current professional practices and challenges in career-education programming
- Knowledge of or experience in liberal-arts settings in higher education
- Experience in program creation, planning, implementation and assessment
- Familiarity with the Handshake platform (or another career education-related platform)
- Familiarity with Moodle (or another Learning Management System)
- Some graduate study or post-bac course work
