As a liberal arts college, the humanities intersect with everything we do. After all, what is an education without an understanding of what it means to be human?

Writers, language-lovers and those who enjoy asking the big questions about life and society will find a home among our humanities programs. You could even join the student-staff of The Crucible, our student-produced literary magazine, or The Earlham Word, our campus newspaper.

Established in 1971, Summer Wilderness is one of the oldest and most respected pre-orientation programs in the country. This 21-day expedition, coordinated by our outdoor education program, builds confidence and connects you with other new classmates before the start of the fall semester—a great beginning to your four-year Earlham adventure!

Ready to tune into your adventurous side?

The value of Summer Wilderness goes well beyond the initial experience. In post-participation surveys, students report establishing early—and lasting—friendships, increased self-confidence, comfort with faculty and academic expectations, and a sense of readiness for the challenges and opportunities of college.

Our hand drum ensemble is just one of the many ways you can engage with the arts at Earlham—no matter which major you choose. Our Center for Visual and Performing Arts is a state-of-the-art facility that’s earned a LEEDS Gold certification. Inside, you’ll find dedicated studios for photography, painting, weaving, ceramics and metalwork; a black box performance space for theatre; and a beautiful recital hall for our music ensembles.

As the only student-run barn and collegiate horse program in the U.S., Earlham’s equestrian program provides a wealth of opportunities not available at any other college or university. Earlham College also offers a unique equestrian management minor, which recognizes the great deal of work students do as part of their training and leadership managing Earlham’s barn and stables and teaching the program’s curriculum.

Earlham has a strong reputation for producing scientists, researchers and medical professionals. From Stanley Hall’s namesake Wendell Stanley and his research that laid the groundwork for vaccines, to Margaret Hamilton’s coding that sent NASA to the moon, our alumni have a long history of pushing the boundaries of science. Today, our students study and conduct research alongside faculty in our science complex, which includes the state-of-the-art Center for Science and Technology, another LEEDS Gold-certified building.

Earlham isn’t the kind of place where you’ll socialize exclusively with students from their own major or make friends only with people from similar backgrounds. We work hard at creating a real community—where people celebrate together, have fun together, cheer one another on at games and performances, offer support to those who need it and hold one another accountable when things go wrong. Those values are at the heart of how we live together, in residence halls and group houses, working together to make Earlham a good experience for everybody.
