Application Information

The Bonner Scholarship provides financial support for those admitted domestic students who demonstrate financial need and a commitment to service. Please familiarize yourself with the information below before applying to the Bonner Scholars Program.

  • Eligible candidates must have an expected family contribution (EFC) on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) of $12,000 or less in order to be considered. Be sure to complete the FAFSA before February 1.
  • International students are not eligible because financial eligibility is based on the FAFSA.
  • Past service experience is not a requirement as circumstances may have prevented some students from participating in community service.

In order to be considered for the Bonner Scholars Program, students must submit the following by February 1:

  • A completed Earlham application, which must be submitted before starting the Bonner application (found here)
  • A completed FAFSA (found here)
  • A Bonner application and letter of recommendation through the Earlham application portal

To apply for the Bonner Scholars Program, you must complete an application which includes eight short answer questions and have someone familiar with your service or other relevant activities submit a letter of recommendation. All materials are submitted via Earlham's online application form. The Bonner application will become available once you have submitted your application to Earlham.

The deadline for receiving all applications is February 1. All letters of recommendations are due February 8.

In addition to completing the Bonner Scholars Program application, you should ask someone to write a letter of recommendation for you. This individual should be someone you do volunteer work with (a supervisor, fellow volunteer or someone served by your volunteer activities) or someone outside your family who is familiar with the qualities and activities that qualify you for the Bonner Scholars Program.

When you decide to apply for the Bonner Scholars Program, please take the following steps.

  • Contact the person you have in mind and make sure he or she can write a letter of recommendation for you and submit it by February 8.
  • Let him or her know that an email will be sent with information and instructions for submitting his or her letter after you submit your Bonner application.
  • Follow-up with the person who is writing the recommendation to ensure the letter is submitted by February 8.

A recommendation request will be made by Earlham Admissions on your behalf to the person you have requested to write your recommendation after you submit your Bonner application. Only letters of recommendation submitted directly by the recommender will be accepted.

We will notify all applicants of our decision by early March. Shortly thereafter, recipients will receive a financial aid package reflecting the Bonner Scholarship and any other additional aid required to meet the student's total verified financial need.
