Can I Bring My Horse to College?

At Earlham College, you can. Earlham, located in Richmond, Indiana, offers excellent boarding facilities, including indoor and outdoor arenas and riding trails, all within easy walking distance of campus. One of the things that sets Earlham apart is that our equestrian program is it is the only completely student-run, cooperative equestrian program in the country, allowing students to gain experience in leadership roles and participate in group decision-making. Many students find that participating in the equestrian program is one of the most rewarding — and enjoyable — parts of their college experience.

Do I have to major in riding or equine science to bring my horse to college?

Students from any major may bring their horses to Earlham. Because the program is run by students, it is open to anyone, including beginners. Interested students have the opportunity to participate in hunt seat equestrian competitions, but there is also room in the program for those who want to learn to ride or have never before had the opportunity to learn about horses.

Can I ride horses at college if I don’t own one?

Earlham provides several horses that are available for recreational riding and lessons. This allows students of all backgrounds and economic circumstances the opportunity to gain experience riding horses and learn how to care for these majestic animals. At Earlham, it’s not uncommon for students who begin with no experience with horses to eventually take on leadership roles at the horse barn.
