Earlham College believes that student work-study employees are genuine employees in actual positions. Students frequently require references from supervisors after college and often find that the choices made and the habits formed in college work-study positions can impact future job and career choices.
Three types of paid jobs are available to Earlham College students: On-Campus Federal College Work-Study positions, Off-Campus Service Internship positions and On-Campus Non-Work-Study positions. Position postings are collected and advertised at the beginning of each semester by the Bonner Center for Service and Vocation (BCSV).
On-Campus Federal College Work-Study positions are part of a student’s financial aid package. Students must have been granted financial aid from the Financial Aid Office to be hired into an On-Campus Federal College Work-Study position. These positions can be found within many departments on campus and can be held by both domestic and international students. Note: The U.S. government mandates that international students can work only on campus.
Off-Campus Federal College Work-Study are with local nonprofits within the Richmond Community. Again, Federal College Work-Study through the Financial Aid Office must be granted to apply for these positions. These positions provide ideal opportunities for students who would like to be more involved in the service community and develop work skills. These can be held only by domestic students. The BCSV creates a handbook of local nonprofits that hire students for these positions.
A limited number of On-Campus Non-Work-Study positions are available. Many of these are skill specific and not suitable for every student. Some of these positions often include tutors, teaching assistants and certified lifeguards. The BCSV collects and posts these positions, many of which are specific to academic departments or courses and are made available to students of sophomore standing and above.
Students who are having difficulty finding employment can go to the BCSV for further assistance in their search.
