Application Instructions for First-Year Students

Use these instructions if you are applying as a first-year student and are a U.S. citizen.

Requirements
Basic Application Form Included in the Common Application, or download and mail.
Supplemental Information Form Complete this form on the Common Application website, or download (pdf) and mail.
Secondary School Report and Counselor Recommendation Available on the Common Application website. To be completed by your guidance counselor.
High School Transcript Request an official copy be sent from your guidance office. Earlham expects applicants to have completed at least 15 academic high school units or the equivalent, four in English, three in mathematics, and two or more in a second language, in science, and in history or social studies. Experience in the area of studio or performing arts is very desirable.
Teacher's Recommendation Available on the Common Application website. To be completed by the teacher of your choice.
Application Essay The Common Application includes an essay section. Your essay should be an original piece of writing that demonstrates your thinking process and writing style.
Standardized Test Scores (Optional) Earlham has a "test-optional" policy which means applicants are not required to submit any standardized test scores. Should you choose to submit your scores, our SAT code is 1195 and our ACT code is 1186. Read our policy.

In assessing applications, the Admissions Office conducts a holistic review of the items listed in the Requirements chart. If you have had a personal interview with one of our admissions counselors, a report of that interview also is considered.

Early Decision
Application due by: November 15 (extended to allow students on the East Coast additional time to file their common application and complete requirements for transcripts and recommendations in light of the severe damage along the Eastern Seaboard caused by Hurricane Sandy)

Let us know your decision by: January 15

You must sign an Early Decision Agreement and agree to withdraw applications to other colleges if admitted.

You can request an early estimate of an expected financial aid package by submitting the Early Estimator form to the Financial Aid office by December 15. Please contact the Financial Aid office for more information.

Earlham welcomes applications from students who have successfully completed courses at another college but who have not earned a four-year degree. Most transfer candidates are admitted for Fall Semester, but transfer students may also begin their studies at Earlham in the Spring Semester.

Most international students are admitted in the Fall Semester so they can participate in New Student Orientation, which includes special sessions specifically for international students. However, international students are welcome to enroll in the Spring. In addition to a regular academic adviser, a special adviser works closely with international students on matters of immigration issues, cultural adaptation and practical concerns.

TOEFL or SAT Reasoning Test as appropriate.
You may submit certified photocopies.
The SAT I and TOEFL code for Earlham is 1195.

Personal Statement

Your statement should be an original piece of writing that demonstrates your thinking process and writing style. Do not submit formal essays, creative writing or academic research.
