Undergraduate Philosophy Journals,
Conferences, & Essay Contests
Philosophy Department, Earlham College

This page collects everything we can find about journals, conferences, and essay contests for undergraduate philosophy students. It's based on hardcopy flyers, email correspondence, and web research. We post old information when we don't have new information, in hopes that these journals, conferences, and contests are ongoing concerns. Visit again to see what's accumulated, and let us know if you find anything we ought to add, cut, or modify.

We omit journals that only accept the work of students enrolled at the school publishing the journal, such as Ex Nihilo from the University of Texas at Austin.

As we revise the page in the future, we will delete most of the details which readers can find on a journal's web site. This will free us of the obligation to keep these details current.

In general, our information is older, and perhaps obsolete, for journals, conferences, and contests without web sites. For these, if the entries below don't include certain basic facts, then we don't have them. I ask better-informed readers to send us an update.

Thanks,
Ferit Güven

Discourse: An Interdisciplinary Philosophical Journal

A journal from the University of San Francisco publishing the work of graduate and undergraduate students.

The theme for the Spring 1999 issue will be relations. Here is a quotation from a 12/98 flyer:

Contemporary philosophy has increasingly recognized the importance of context to understanding, or the importance of acknowledging that truth appears as much in the relation between concepts, ideas, or phenomena as in the things themselves. Heidegger, for example, claimed that the meaning of humankind was not to be found alone in the transcendental ego, but in humankind's being-in-the-world. Postmodern thinkers recognize that truth is in the relation of signifiers, not just the signified. Postcolonialists and critical theorists acknowledge that the structures of power —the relations— often determine whose voice is heard. Social scientists are in the forefront of those who recognize that the meaning of both a society and its individuals is located in their relation to each other.

The editors of Discourse will consider papers on any issue in philosophy which addresses the importance and meaning of these and similar relations. [...]
