Wayang: Javanese Shadow Theater

It is difficult to convey in a few words just how central wayang (shadow theater) is in Javanese culture, nor how rich and complex it is. Truly a total work art, it encompasses poetry, song, dialogue, highly literary description, instrumental music, mythology, drama, humor, psychological insight, philosophy, spiritual knowledge, intricate visual art, hit tunes, with occasional forrays into political satire and gender bending.
