Comedian Erik Rivera isn’t bashful about sharing the personal details of his life on stage.
“That’s what my comedy is: Relationships, my family and just the crazy things that have happened to us,” Rivera says. “My family is crazy. I’m not going to sugarcoat it.”
Next fall, Rivera hopes to introduce his family to a larger audience as part of a new sitcom on NBC being developed by Desperate Housewives’ star Eva Longoria’s production company.
“The show will be based on my stand-up and my family’” he says. “We came close last year to getting it up this fall, but circumstances have pushed it back.”
Rivera performs at Earlham College at 8 p.m. Friday as part of kickoff to this fall’s Artist and Lecture Series’ events. He comes to campus one night after performing at Hollywood’s Laugh Factory on the same bill as comedian Tim Allen, the star of one of television’s most popular shows, Home Improvement.
A rising star in the entertainment industry, Rivera has appeared on stage in such venues as the Comedy Cellar and the Hollywood Improv. He also makes television appearances on SiTV, Comedy Central and MTV Tr3s.
His rise to fame is documented by LATV’s American Latino series, which highlights accomplished Latinos. Rivera also represented NBC on the network’s Stand-Up for Diversity College Tour!
Rivera has never performed at Earlham before.
“I love performing on college campuses,” Rivera says. “I’m going to give them the best show that I can. My job is to make people laugh — anyway you can do it.”
Tickets required: $10/adults, $5/students and seniors.
One free ticket with Earlham ID.
