Faculty Search Advertising

How Search Advertising in The Chronicle Works

Earlham participates in The Chronicle of Higher Education's contracted advertising plan. By agreeing to place a specified number of print display ads during a calendar year, the College receives a discount on advertising space and can post an Employer Profile at the Chronicle's Web site. Each print advertisement includes a 30-day Web posting of the position. The Employer Profile is updated each year and lessens the need for Search Committees to repeat general College information within individual department's position advertisements. In addition it enables us to provide links to Earlham's Website for even more information.

Earlham uses Chronicle advertising to supply its required print ad for its hiring procedures as described in the Faculty Search Manual. To count toward our contracted number of ads with the Chronicle per year, all ads must be processed through the Marketing and Communications Office. Only ads coming through Marketing and Communications may be counted toward our contract. Earlham's typical display ads measure one column wide by 5 inches high.

Instructions for Search Committees for Teaching Faculty

  1. Referring to the Faculty Search Manual, determine the wording you would like to include in the advertising shell. Download the PDF of the shell document, cut and paste the text into a Word document, and insert the language you have chosen to replace the underlined copy. A sample PDF of a finished advertisement is provided to demonstrate how the shell translates into an actual ad.
  2. Notify the Academic Dean's Administrative Assistant Darlena Rankin that your search committee is ready to place The Chronicle ad for your search. The Dean's Office must give the go ahead for all advertisements to be placed. Darlena will let the Marketing and Communications Office know that your request has been approved.
  3. E-mail your advertising copy and any requests or questions to the Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications. Marketing and Communications will lay out your ad and share a proof.
  4. Once a final proof has been approved, Marketing and Communications will place your ad according to your wishes. You will be notified that The Chronicle placement has been completed by e-mail. There is usually a two-week delay between the deadline for placing an ad and its appearance in a print issue; Web postings can often start within 48 hours of the placement.
  5. Marketing and Communications handles the billing for the ads, working with the Academic Dean’s Office.
