Groundskeeper — Facilities

Earlham College is seeking a Groundskeeper to work in the Facilities Department. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week/52 weeks per year). The starting rate for this position is $12.13 per hour with an increase to $12.28 per hour after completion of 90-day probationary period. Compensation includes a benefit package.

The position is under the direct supervision of the Grounds Supervisor.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities


  • Perform proper landscape element, turf, tree and shrub installation, maintenance and removals/replacements.
  • Perform turf maintenance and ensure all assigned areas provide a “clean and green” appearance.
  • Assist in the maintenance of all roads and alleys on and around Earlham properties as directed.
  • Perform snow removal for all campus roads, parking lots and sidewalks as directed, both with equipment and by hand.
  • Operate and maintain small equipment and tools required to complete required tasks.
  • Pick up and dispose of trash, both on own initiative and as directed.


  • Assist with event set-ups as needed.
  • Assist with moving of furniture as needed.
  • Clear leaves and other debris from eaves, troughs and drains.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Facilities Department supervision.

Experience & Qualifications


  • A high school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Two years’ documented experience in turf or landscape maintenance for a large academic campus or equivalent setting.
  • Experience in maintaining a wide variety of light gasoline and diesel equipment.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds, and move heavy objects and equipment safely alone or as part of a team.     
  • Must be able to operate a forklift and material handling equipment.
  • Physical dexterity and hand-eye coordination are both important.
  • Must be able to work outside in inclement weather.
  • Ability to respond reliably to work call-ins outside of normal working hours, including nights, weekends or holidays.
  • Ability to work with a minimum of direct supervision.
  • Ability to work well within a team setting.
  • Must maintain a valid, U.S. state issued driver’s license and meet all qualification requirements for operation of college vehicles and equipment, at all times while employed by the college.   


  • An associate degree in landscape architecture, horticulture or related field.
  • Five or more years’ experience in turf or landscape maintenance for a large academic campus or equivalent setting.

Employment is contingent upon acceptable background checks (criminal and sex offender).
