Description

Earlham College is seeking applications for the Director of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer. This is a full-time, 12-month administrative appointment. Salary is commensurate with experience, and includes a full benefit package.

The Director of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer (DIT/CIO) will utilize contemporary knowledge of information technology to vision and lead Earlham College’s comprehensive commitment to support and promote the college-wide strategic use of technology that advances the academic mission and provides administrative support of the College. This requires a high level of familiarity with the various constituents and a commitment to meeting the information and communications needs that exist for all faculty, staff and students. As a leadership position, the CIO is responsible for envisioning future technology needs and for recommending technology resource strategies, priorities and projects that will best achieve the College's strategic objectives.

The DIT/CIO reports to the Vice President for Finance and Administration, and will lead and manage the Information Technology Services department which includes administrative computing (Banner/Ellucian), non-Banner enterprise application services, help desk (including user support services), telecommunications (VOIP), networking services, classroom instructional technology, academic technology consulting, information security, infrastructure services, printing center operation and IT Operations. The DIT/CIO provides the Cabinet with a strategic direction for the College’s technological initiatives in collaboration with the Library Director and the Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communications.

Key Priorities

Information technology (IT) systems and capabilities at Earlham are reliable and capacity rich. The individuals on the Earlham IT team are highly talented and dedicated to the College. These strengths provide the College with the opportunity to do even more with technology and information management to further the mission of its liberal arts education and, in particular, to enhance teaching, learning and scholarship. With that in mind, Earlham seeks in the next DIT/CIO the experiences and skills to focus on several areas, including:

  • Maintaining and enhancing the reliability, functionality and responsiveness of Earlham's current hardware system.
  • Attracting and developing talented IT colleagues.
  • Collaborating to develop, communicate and implement technology policies.
  • Enhancing the security of data across campus.
  • Partnering with key individuals and in the development of digital literacy for Earlham students.
  • Having contemporary knowledge of emerging technology trends and capacities with the mindset of a “digital innovator” with a willingness to experiment — in particular, in understanding where technology is moving, what Earlham might consider doing differently, and where the College can enhance or transform the teacher-learner experience and that of Earlham administrators in doing their work.
  • Vision, develop (with consultation), communicate and oversee implementation of a technology strategy for Earlham for the next 3-5 years.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains robust working relationships with the ITS team, the Vice President for Finance and Administration, the Cabinet, faculty, staff, students, and other College community members to insure there is input and collaboration where appropriate. Build effective relationships with all campus constituencies to understand the academic and administrative IT needs of the entire community.
  • Collaborates with campus committees to develop, document and communicate all pertinent ITS-related policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that internal controls and relevant security measures are developed, implemented and followed. Legal requirements include, but are not limited to, all current accounting regulations, FERPA, HIPPA, PCI compliance, Higher Education Act, and maintenance of data integrity.
  • Ensures IT policies minimize risk to the institution by engaging comprehensive information security policies.
  • Ensures IT policies are appropriate, current, communicated and followed.
  • Ensures that technological support levels to the campus community are maintained at the highest appropriate level. Provides technical support when necessary.
    • Hardware
      • Assumes primary responsibility for the overall development, support and security of Earlham’s Information and Telecommunication Technology infrastructure. Develops, articulates and builds support of a strategic roadmap to create a technical infrastructure capable of responding to and supporting new educational technologies to enhance learning and teaching.
    • Software
      • Maintains existing software with updates (Banner and non-Banner).
      • Assists offices with selection and installation/implementation of software for academic and administrative use.
      • Assists offices in developing effective and timely reporting for decision support and planning.
    • Desktop
      • Advises and purchases desktop units for faculty, staff and lab use.
      • Maintains software on desktop units.
      • Troubleshoots issues for users.
    • Classroom
      • Ensures classroom technology is in good working order and as robust as reasonable with the budget.
      • Troubleshoots issues for users.
    • Training and Process
      • Supports institutional efforts to use technology to improve and streamline business processes.
      • Provides opportunities for training on Banner, desktop software, etc. for users.
    • Help Desk
      • Builds a strong customer service orientation focused on providing reliable and responsive services to faculty, staff and students in forwarding the teaching, administration and management goals of the College.
    • Project Management
      • Ensures that major IT projects are planned through an inclusive and transparent IT governance process.
      • Supervises all ITS projects so that they are thoroughly developed and tested and ensure end-user considerations are central. Oversees creation of implementation plans for migrations and installations with follow-through to completion.
  • Manages all ITS vendor relationships, especially those where maintenance contracts and/or leases are involved.
    • Provide support and consistency for faculty and staff by purchasing all technology equipment through ITS.
    • Becomes aware of options available in the market for purchasing that enable good stewardship of limited resources.
    • Aware of and uses as appropriate any buying consortiums available.
  • Provides leadership and supervision to the entire ITS team, including student workers.
  • Ensures a culture of the highest customer service and user experience to all campus constituents while balancing needs of the faculty, administrative staff, students and the overall College.
  • Creates a working environment that fosters a team spirit and unity of purpose to maintain a professional team that is supportive of one another and of the College community.
  • Continually improves IT operations by systematically measuring performance towards accomplishment of institutional and divisional goals.
  • Provides mentoring and professional development for the IT team, ensuring appropriate staffing and resources for recruiting, developing, and retaining excellent staff members in a productive, team-oriented environment.
  • Meets as appropriate to communicate updates on current ITS projects, budget, service outages, updates, etc., with:
    • ITS employees,
    • The Vice President for Finance and Administration,
    • The Vice President’s other direct reports, and
    • The campus including faculty, staff and students.
  • Participates in events such as:
    • New Student Orientation, RA training or any committee meeting when requested.
    • As a member of the Earlham College faculty, attends faculty meetings and, if nominated, serves on faculty committees.
    • College Cabinet.
    • Assists with special events, such as graduation, summer orientation, move-in day, etc. as needed.
    • Appropriate professional organizations, such as the Consortium of Liberal Arts Colleges and Universities (CLAC) and EDUCAUSE, GLCA counterparts and Ellucian conferences.
  • Provides leadership and oversight of Information Security, Compliance, Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity planning for the Earlham community.
  • Manages the budget and financial aspects of the Earlham Information and Telecommunication Infrastructure.
    • Recommends multi-year major equipment and software expenditures.
    • Evaluates resource allocation and use in order to enhance efficiencies and to deliver information and telecommunication technology services within the constraints of the budget.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Experience & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will have excellent leadership, management, interpersonal and communications skills. The ability to listen, synthesize, collaborate, lead and communicate at all levels will be critical. The College seeks a leader with a track record of innovation and creativity in the application and management of technology. The individual should have an understanding of the values of a liberal arts institution, a working knowledge of the strategic issues facing higher education, and a broad perspective of leading IT practices in higher education.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, or Computer Science is required; an MBA or other advanced degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of five years IT management experience with at least three years as a chief information officer in a comparably sized organization is required.
  • Highly diverse technology skill/working knowledge of hardware, software, networking, telecommunications, project management and database operations is required.
  • Must be highly self-directed, well-organized, detail-oriented and comfortable working with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines and to work occasional overtime.
  • Must be trustworthy with knowledge of confidential College information.
  • Must be able to consistently present a positive attitude and contribute to a harmonious team environment.
  • Must be able to travel for vendor, consortium and training purposes as required.
  • Must possess the ability to multitask especially within the constraints of the above-described responsibilities.

Experience

It is preferable that candidates have many of the following experiences:

  • Establishing and nurturing relationships and effective collaborations with faculty, students and staff to implement strategies and design services and operate jointly led projects.
  • Proven achievement in establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships including effective interpersonal, presentation and communication skills with executive leadership emphasizing the communication of complex technical and policy information to a broad range of constituents.
  • Anticipating leading-edge trends in technology and positioning the College to take appropriate risk, use technologies in new ways, and effectively make technology adoption decisions.
  • Supporting the integration and adoption of technology to create distinct educational experiences and excellence in teaching, learning and scholarship.
  • Developing an IT plan that balances the need to maintain a strong foundation of IT infrastructure, services and solutions while pursuing innovation.
  • Leading development and implementation of cloud strategies.
  • Effectively managing large capital and operating budgets.
  • Identifying and managing technology-related risks including those related to information security, privacy, and disaster recovery.
  • Navigating challenging labor markets to attract and retain a diverse high performing team of IT professionals.
  • Developing future IT leaders and facilitating the professional development of the IT workforce.
  • Proven team-building success with an ability to develop, mentor, motivate and lead employees in a collaborative environment that fosters teamwork and excitement toward implementing new technologies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with system design and development principles, project management methodologies, service management principles (e.g., ITIL), and technology architectures for a large-scale enterprise.
  • Experience in planning technology development and innovation over multi-year planning timelines with the keen ability to negotiate and manage vendor and consultant relationships and engagements.
  • Experience in using technology to support learning, teaching and research in higher education.
