Graphic Designer — Marketing and Communications

Earlham College is accepting applications for the position of Graphic Designer in the Marketing and Communications Office.  This is a full time, 12-month administrative faculty appointment. Salary is commensurate with experience, and includes a full benefits package.

The College seeks a creative professional with experience in both print and electronic media. Earlham is looking for someone who can take direction from written or spoken ideas and convert them seamlessly into images, layouts and other designs. The successful candidate should have an intimate understanding of how marketing campaigns work to better support our clients. They must have analytical skills, artistic ability, communication skills, computer skills, and evidence of creativity.

This position reports to the Art Director, and is part of a highly collaborative, multifunctional marketing and communications team that includes writing and editing, design, photo, video, Web development and marketing strategy.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Meeting clients or account managers to discuss the project objectives and requirements of the job.
  • Estimating the time required to complete the work.
  • Developing creative briefs that define the client's purpose.
  • Thinking creatively to produce new ideas and concepts and developing interactive design.
  • Using innovation to redefine a design brief within the constraints of cost and time.
  • Presenting finalized ideas and concepts to clients.
  • Working with a range of media and keeping up to date with emerging technologies.
  • Proofreading to produce accurate and high-quality work.
  • Working as part of a team with printers, copywriters, photographers, illustrators, other designers, Web developers and marketing specialists.

Experience & Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree, and three to five years of experience are required.
  • Passion and enthusiasm for design, with a creative flair.
  • A flexible approach when working in a team.
  • Communication skills: Able to meet with clients or the art director to determine the scope of a project and interpret and negotiate briefs with clients.
  • Good presentation skills and the confidence to explain and sell ideas to clients and colleagues.
  • Time management skills and the ability to cope with several projects at a time.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail when finalizing designs.
  • Being open to feedback and willing to make changes to designs.
  • Review designs for errors before printing or publishing them.
  • Create images that identify a product or convey a message.
  • Select colors, images, text style, and layout composition.
  • Present the design to clients or the Art Director.
  • Incorporate changes recommended by the clients into the final design.

Required Computer Skills:

  • Adobe Creative Suites, including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop.
  • Proficiency in basic HTML5, and the ability to inline.
