These scholarships require students to have strong academic achievement or show strong performance with their major. Many of these are chosen by departments and are recognized at the Awards Convocation in the spring.


Ackerman-Nicholson Endowed Scholarship Fund

This award is presented to a student who desires and merits advanced study in journalism or public affairs.

Anna Eves Award

This award is presented to a senior for excellence in the use of the English language, evidence of an appreciation of literature, fine character and consistent effort.

Anna Eves Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is presented to underclass student who has demonstrated excellence in the use of the English language, evidence of an appreciation of literature and who has outstanding character and consistent effort.

Arthur M. Charles Fellowship for International Studies

This award is given to a senior language or language-related major for overall academic excellence.  Other qualifications include fine character and vocational plans which can be furthered by additional language-related study or travel abroad.

Arthur M. Charles Service Award

This award is given to senior language students for service to the Language Department, excellence in foreign language study and fine character.

Bain-Swiggert Endowed Poetry Prize Award Fund

This award is presented to a student who has written a poem that exemplifies “the best English tradition of poetry in form and substance.”

Bub Hanes Prize

This award is presented to a junior who is doing exceptional work in the Management program.

C. Dale Stroman Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 1994 with a bequest from Charles and Glenna Stroman.  They were the parents John Stroman '69.  John was instrumental in persuading his father to include EC in his estate plans.   The scholarship is awarded based upon academic and personal achievement, financial need and the worthiness of character.

Carolyn Markey Beauchamp Endowed Scholarship Fund

Jana Matthews `62 established this scholarship in 1988 in honor of her mother.  It is to be awarded to women who are in the top 15% of their high school class or members of the National Honor Society, have financial need, a special appreciation for literature, language and humanities and are willing to work to improve the human condition.

Charles A. Frueauff Foundation Award

This award is presented to junior science majors whose special accomplishments in science have shown evidence of creativity.

Claude Stinneford Award in Economics

This award is presented to an outstanding junior or senior who is majoring in Economics.

Clifford Crump Phi Beta Kappa Endowed Scholarship Fund

This award honors an Earlham sophomore or junior who has shown high character and scholarship.

CRC Press Chemistry Achievement Award

The CRC Press Chemistry Achievement Award recognizes outstanding scholastic achievement in Chemistry in order to support and encourage sustained interest in the sciences and to “inspire the recipient to enthusiastically pursue scientific excellence.” It is given to a student with outstanding performance in Principles of Chemistry who plans a major in the Natural Sciences and consists of a personalized copy of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics.

David W. Boren Memorial Scholarship Fund

This scholarship established in 1964 by the family and friends of David Boren '58 provides an annual award to a first-year student possessing the ability and motivation to do above-average academic work and with character and personality traits for effective participation and leadership in College and community affairs.

DJ Angus-Scientech Educational Foundation Scholarship

This award sponsored annually by the DJ Angus Scientech Educational Foundation is given to the Earlham sophomore or junior who has shown the greatest improvement in grade point average over the past year.

Earlham Environmental Leadership Award

This annual award honors a current Junior or Senior who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in environmental matters at Earlham. Criteria for consideration include: activity and effective work in environmental issues on campus, academic excellence in environmental study (broadly defined), co-curricular engagement, and overall leadership qualities and abilities.

Florence Long Mathematics Award Fund

The award is presented to a senior who has shown intelligent and enthusiastic appreciation of math and done outstanding work in the field and is a "fine type of Earlham student".

George Van Dyke Distinguished Student in Physics Award

This award is presented to a senior student in recognition of outstanding work in physics.

Gertrude Pardieck Hubbard Distinguished Student Award Fund

This award is given to a student majoring in mathematics, physics or chemistry who has done outstanding work.

Gettman Endowed Prize Award Fund

This award is given to a student for the best essay on the works of prose, fiction, or poetry by a major writer in the English language.

Homer L. and Edna W. Morris Endowed Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 1965 by Edna Morris (class of 1914) in memory of her husband, Homer, class of 1911, who was also a professor of Economics, Political Science and Sociology from 1918-28.  Homer was also a member of the Board of Trustees from 1930-51.  The scholarship is to be awarded to an outstanding junior or senior majoring in political science and interested in national or international service.

Howard Alexander Prize

This award is presented to a senior whose intelligence, imagination, energy, and devotion to mathematics exemplify those of Howard Alexander, Professor of Mathematics at Earlham from 1952-1976.

J. Arthur Funston Endowed Scholarship Fund

This award is presented to a student entering his/her senior year who has demonstrated interest and capacity in the fields of politics, law and public service.

Janica Zuck Richards Memorial Endowed Award Fund

This award is presented to a student for the best one-act play or short radio script on a religious topic or problem.

Janice Beard Kem and Charles Kem Endowed Award

This award is presented to a student who plans to become a teacher in elementary or secondary education and shows academic merit and teaching potential.

John and Anne Pilgrim "Second Chance" Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship, created in 2011, is awarded to students who are academically talented and are incoming transfer students with financial need.

Kendall-Reagan Prize in English

This award is given to a junior English Major showing great promise for future work in English.

Mary Jane Harvey Endowed Memorial Award

This award is presented to a student who has done distinguished work in the fields of art, drama or music.

Orville A. Wilkinson Merit Scholarship

This scholarship for deserving students was established in 1972 by Elma Dickinson Wilkinson, Class of 1904, in memory of her husband, Class of 1903.

Paula Price Ramsey Endowed Scholarship

Edward Thomas Ramsey established this scholarship fund in 1980 in memory of his wife who died in an auto accident in 1978.  Paula was a member of the Class of 1968. Recipients must demonstrate academic promise and clear financial need.

Psychology Department Award

Given to an upper-level psychology major who has demonstrated high achievement in the major, service to the department, and engagement in the field of psychology

Ruby Davis Award

This award is presented to an outstanding senior in the Humanities/English Division.

Russell L. Malcolm Pre-Medical Award

This award is given to one or two outstanding seniors and is chosen by the pre-medical advisor.  These students demonstrate high scholastic attainment, integrity, courage, initiative and awareness of social responsibility (qualities deemed essential in a physician) and participation in extracurricular activities and interest in problems outside the immediate area of classroom assignments.

Russell M. Lawall Biomedical Research Award Endowment Fund

This award is presented to students selected by the Health Service Program Committee to encourage and facilitate research with a faculty member in the broad areas of health and medicine.

Russell M. Lawall Physics in Memory of H. Brinton Award Fund

This award is given to a physics major conducting original study or research.

Ruth Anna Wright Browning Endowed Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was established in 1994 by Charles and Mary Wright in memory of their daughter, Ruth Anna '53, who died of cancer.  It is awarded to a student in good standing with demonstrated financial need.

Samuel and Grace Darroch Endowed Scholarship Fund

The scholarship was created in 1969 with a bequest from their daughter Virginia. It supports a pre-medical student who is most worthy and who will benefit most by such scholarship.

Sociology/Anthropology Faculty Award

This award is presented for outstanding intellectual achievement in the field of Sociology/Anthropology.

W. Malcolm Elder Endowed Scholarship Fund

Established in 1985 by Lucille Elder in memory of her husband, this scholarship provides financial assistance based on academic excellence and need.

William M. Fuson Endowed Award in Sociology/Anthropology

This award is presented to a graduating senior who has done outstanding work in the field of Sociology/Anthropology and who exhibits the dedication to apply this knowledge to bettering the human condition.
