Sarah Waddle '12Itasca State Park, Minnesota
Sarah helped visitors engage with the plants, animals and natural features of Itasca State Park. But first, she had to learn about them herself.
“In college science classes, we learn about organisms from all over the world,” says Sarah, an Environmental Studies major. “Here, I see a flower and have to figure out what it is. It’s been really cool for me to learn so much about one specific place.”
Sarah says that the job is similar to theatre — another of her passions — because she helps viewers to safely experience something new.
“You get to invite people to share the outdoors with you, which they may never have done otherwise, and they get to take that with them,” Sarah says. “It feels great when people come to your program, and afterwards they say ‘Wow, I didn’t know that. I’m really glad I came.’”
