Nate Torres '12McNair Research Project: EthnobotanyNate has always wanted to be a doctor. Over the summer, Torres researched the medicinal herb feverfew, under the guidance of Mike Deibel, associate professor of chemistry.
The biochemistry major created his own protocol for extracting feverfew’s active ingredient. As he refined his procedure over five weeks, he also polished his lab skills.
“When you walk into a chemistry lab, it can be intimidating and overwhelming,” he said, “I feel well equipped to do what’s asked of me, by myself.”
A McNair Scholar, Nate is now looking at M.D./Ph.D. programs that will allow him to keep researching while he finishes his medical training.
