Introduction to Medical Interpreting is partnering with LUNA Language Services for this EPIC Term. This collaborative course was designed specifically for Earlham students who have already achieved bilingualism in their studies and are seeking ways to apply their knowledge. Students also will receive 40 hours of field-based job shadowing, allowing a chance for applied practice of their newfound interpreting skills.

This EPIC Term is co-sponsored by the Center for Global Health and the Center for Global Education.

Introduction to Medical Interpreting ...

  • is a twelve-day immersive experience for students who will start their sophomore, junior or senior year at Earlham in the Fall semester.
  • is for students who have a proficiency in English and another language.
  • teaches students the basics of interpretation, particularly in a healthcare setting.
  • provides students with skills to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • prepares students for potential careers in healthcare and in interpreting.

Introduction to Medical Interpreting ...

  • is a non-credit bearing ten-day experience, running from Sunday, August 6, though Friday, August 18, prior to the beginning of the Fall semseter. It is led by faculty of Earlham's Center for Global Health, Earlham's Center for Global Education, and LUNA Language Services.
  • Learn basic interpreter and health care information skills, including HIPAA and confidentiality
  • Cultivate advocacy and culturally appropriate communication skills.
  • Become immersed in professional development and technical practice
  • Job shadowing of Medical Interpreters in Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Mentoring of individuals and groups at Earlham College and in Indianapolis, Indiana

Cost:

  • Program fee of $450
  • Includes all expenses during the program - accommodations, all meals and equipment, transportation
